Can I get by in Peru or Argentina (major cities) for six months with six thousand dollars?

I would like to take spanish course there as well and preferably want to live with a family, not on my own as I would get lonely and feel somewhat anxious...is it possible to do on this dollar amount with my main expenses being, food, lodging, transportation, and spanish courses?

I think you could definitely. I lived in Argentina for 4.5 months and def did not have that much money. I probably used like 2000 bucks. Because once you are in Argentina 6000 dollars is actually like 18,000 pesos. This is a lot of money to most Argentines. Also depends on how expensive your taste is of course. I traveled by train everyday, went in taxis and remises and also usually went out on weekends and survived but also I stayed with family so I didn't buy food. I had home cooked meals everyday and went out to eat for lunch with friends a lot of days but supper was always cooked at home for me. But anyways...I think you could definitely do it .
cuidate and have fun
feel free to email me if you want to know anything else about Argentina, I lived in Buenos Aires but did do a bit of traveling.

Argentina is a cheap country to live but remeber that it all depends on your tastes but for instance you canhave a great meal at the best restaurant for 30 dollars...so is pretty cheap...
besides that you have to pay attention to the courses that you are going to take cause here they take adavance of tourist to charge you more and maybe if you come here you can get a teacher for less than 400 dollars a month.
I live in Cordoba wich is a city near buenos aires and is less expensier but let me remind you that 6000 dollars here are 18.000 pesos and there´s a lot of families here that live with 2000 pesos a month.
I spend a little bit more but you can make it.
If you stay with a family and save money on food you can spend 1000 dollars a month
good luck

Buenos Aires is not as inexpensive as it used to be. You will be pretty tight if your are including your airline tickets in the 6000 dollars. But I also have a couple of friends living in Lima, Peru and they tell me is really expensive there compared to Buenos Aires. So based on prices, I think you should choose Argentina.

Just this past February, I stayed at a five-star hotel (Hotel Sofitel) in downtown Buenos Aires for $150 a day. I ate complete steak dinners with red wine for $10 at some of the city's best restaurants. The 45 min cab ride from downtown to the international airport cost $25. And handcrafted leather goods cost about 1/2 what they would cost in the States.

Based on this narrow database, I would guesstimate room and board, and transportation in Buenos Aires would cost about 1/2 what comparable room and board, and transportation in the States costs. So, to answer your own question, could you live comfortably where you now are for about $2,000 per month? If you can, then you'll likely find $1,000 US will get you that same comfort in Buenos Aires. (By the way Argentina uses the $ for demarking pesos and sometimes Argentinians working in the tourist districts use the $ to mean US dollars. All very confusing; ask what the $ means.)

Peru is cheap. But I don't think Argentina would be.

Lima is OK. I can't tell much cos I went there for 3 days and hated it.

Buenos Aires is expensive in terms of lodging. Transportation is cheap by bus. Taxi is little too much. Food is better you cook. Beef, lamb, wine are great and dirt cheap.

I think it should be OK. If you want to check the rates before you go, with the family you would want to stay with in Lima or Buenos Aires. Other costs should be fine for 6 months living on shoe strings though. Not inclsuive of airfare though.

Spanish course can be expensive in Argentina. But cheaper in Peru.

Yes, in Argentina. I am from Buenos Aires and I live here, of course...
My country is very cheap for foreign people, because six thousand dollars are eighteen thousand pesos. If you study Spanish here in Argentina, it will be easy for you to communicate with other people, because there's a lot of people who speaks English.

You can check the home stay system. Some travel agencies have their sources or try: www.studyabroadlinks.com/search/Argentin...

to be honest, it would really depend on how much the course costs. living in argentina is incredibly cheap at the moment and i dont doubt that 6 grand could get you through 6 months if youre careful with your money and dont buy useless things. the most expensive part of your trip will be your flight ticket and maybe your course (depending on if you take it at a school or if you just get a private tutor).

when are you planning on going? i have family in argentina and could maybe help you out.

gorilon
It depend on what part of Argentina you are going to be
Also for me 6,000 dollars is not going to be enough. I will need a least 2,000 dollars a month

$1,000 a month? In Argentina, you could, if you don't mind eating hamburgers and hot dogs only.
I guess, if you make friends, then you can share expenses, food and transportation.

Still, I think $1,000 a month it's very tight.
