Can I just use American money and my credit card in Argentina? |
Im going to Buenos Aires and was wondering if I need to exchange for pesos, or if I would probably be alright with USD and my credit card. This is not so much for hotel and travel expenses, but for souvieneirs, would shops accept these two methods of payment. And should I be careful using my credit card down there?
Thanks |

Small shops will not take credit cards and prob. not American money.using dollars in a foreign country is never a good idea..they always round off the exchange rate to their advantage...and you pay at least 10% more. Best thing to do is to use your ATM card to get pesos out. You will get the best exchange rate and not need to be walking around with a lot of dollars on you. |

You will be able to use your USD at almost every place. But it is not wise as you will face different exchange rates, plus end up with ARPesos, anyways!
You are able to change, at any bank and/or exchange office from 10:00 am to 15:00 pm at the official rate. Life would be much easier.
Plus remember, will also be able to withdraw money from the local ATMs, at official rates, plus your bank's fees (find out before you leave, some banks charge a lot. But for USD5.00 a transaction is safe and secure to do it)
Credit cards are not a problem at all, BUT will need to show ID at most of the places. Your driving licence would be Ok, if you prefer NOT to take your passport with you and leave it at the hotel's safe-box.
And "careful" to use your credit card as you will do everywhere in the world!
Also make sure you let your bank know you will be in Argentina. Sometimes, if they are not aware and some debits come from un-known sources the banks decline the transaction. You do not want that to happen a Saturday at mid-night when trying to pay your dinner or drinks at the local club!
Enjoy safely Argentina, you shall love it! |

Don't use USD in Buenos Aires, you will get ripped off!!
Credit cards are fine, also, you can withdraw Pesos with your ATM card at any ATM. Dependng on your bank, they may charge you a lot for it. Mine doesn't through, so it is worth it to check it out. |

Often they accept U.S. money, you will save money if you change it to pesos, do this always in a bank, not with people on the street. Double charges on your statements are dead give aways for credit card theft. It is somewhat rare to have credit card theft, your much more likely to have your whole wallet stolen on the street or in a Argentina store. |

You'll be able to use your credit card most places if you're careful but you should get the dollars exchanged for local currency at either the airport or your hotel. You're less likely to be cheated. |

Many shops at the mall accept usd and they all take credit cards, of course.
But if I were you, I'd have some pesos (ARS) in my pocket as well... that will make payments a lot easier.
Good luck in Argentina! |

your credit cards are fine. I would change out the cash you have....or some of it at least. it would make it ALOT easier if you go somewhere to buy souvenirs or to a market or something. make sure you know the exchange rate and carry a small calculator or something when you go to those liitle markets though....they can tell when you are american and some will jack up the prices b/c they think you have money. |
