Can a gay man live comfortably in Buenos Aires? |
Hi, I am considering retiring (I'm 50) to Latin American country though I would like to live in France, it isn't possible on my level of income and savings. My question is: can a gay man live a comfortable (2 bedroom apartment with garden, cleaning person, restaurants, a car, healthcare...) life in Buenos Aires? I am already multilingual and becoming fluent in Spanish would take about 6 months for me. a) Is it culturally as rich as Paris (museums, intellectual life, people watching...)? b) What would the budget be for a very decent lifestyle? c) Is healthcare of good quality? d) Which is the best place to live with a view to ease of shopping, street life, cultural centers and SAFETY? Thanks. |

Buenos Aires Guide

Hey there! I am from:
http://buenosairesstay.com/gay-buenos-aires.htm
1.
Gay Buenos Aires has surprised me. I expected a city that after hundreds of years of social, political, and economic turmoil would have seen better days. I thought many of the less appealing European attitudes and laws, which criminalised and discriminated against homosexuals, may have prevailed. I suppose my wild imaginings had created some sort of mental time capsule, mainly because many websites sell you ‘old Europe’ in South America. When I got to Buenos Aires, I was over old Europe (until next time of course).
Apart from the architecture and language, much of the airplay could not be further from the truth – Buenos Aires city is a modern metropolis in need of some tender loving care, but building for the XXI Century; moreover, Argentineans generally have a much more enlightened view of homosexuality and since the mid-part of the XIX century.,
My most pleasant surprise; I find Buenos Aires city the most welcoming gay destination in the world. It does not have the time-old gay infrastructures, ghettos and mass commercialisation of homosexuals as do more established gay capitals such as London or New York. I feel so at home here, in any part of the city, in any restaurant or any bar; being gay in Buenos Aires city does not become all consuming part of your life and being. In Buenos Aires, you are you first, and gay if someone can be bothered to ask. In summary, you will find the city has a metro-sexual nature, no gay ghetto, and gay culture, which is not always evident, but extends city life.
The body and ageist cultures are not so prevalent and if I were older and single Buenos Aires would be my first stop!
2. If you can afford it you are best to buy, a good two bedroom apartment will cost anywhere from u$s150-250,000 and we suggest that you take advice from a professional and steer clear of the agencies until you fully understand both the property sector and the tax implications of your proposed move. Cleaning, eating and health care are all dealt with on our website in much detail: http://www.buenosairesstay.com.
3. Of course, Paris is a capital city one would find hard to rival, but Buenos Aires is the most culturally active and interesting capital city in the Americas to my mind, Buenos Aires is so diverse culturally.
A very good lifestyle if you own your own apartment is US 1000 to 1500 each month.
Health care needs some research, opt for a quality insurance product, as one matures, no matter how fit, metabolic disorder increase, supplement your healthcare insurance with a quality travel insurance product for emergencies - it gets you home and treated if you have a significant illness.
Choose: Palermo, Recoleta, or Belgrano - for investment purposes I would be advising you differently. These barrio are safe and packed with things to do - Belgrano would be my choice.
Best

a) yes
b) 1500 U$S to 2000 U$S depending where you will choose to live
c) Yes, if you have a good heath insurance, anyway if you don't paying cash to a dentist you have the same level than USA for les than half of the money
d) that is the difficult one, There are no so many places with all of that. if you are in BA you will find easy shopping, night life, cultural centers but it is not safe.
If you choose the country side, like Mendoza, Cordoba or Neuquen, you will have security and views but no the other.
Near of Palermo, Nunez or Martinez you can find some place with all of that, if you want to pay private security. |

a. It is not nearly as culturally rich as Paris, USA, or any first world county because it is a third world country.
b. The budget for a decent lifestyle is not too high at all, if you are living comfortably in the states, you will get by easily in Argentina. Cars, though, are more expensive, most valuables are. But, necessities are not, since most people don't make too much here anyway. I can't give you a number, but I will tell you it's not too high.
c. healthcare is and isn't good quality. There are good hospitals and false doctors. Being a doctor in Argentina is like an ordinary job in United States, It does not take 8 years of work, only 4. So there are many medically educated people. But, there are also many uneducated people with a fake degree.
d. The capital in Buenos Aires, I suggest in the area of Palermo. Shopping, and culture you've got. I dont get what you mean by street life, but safety isn't too good nationwide. It shouldn't be too much of a problem if you know how to take care of yourself. |
