Yes, it can be done. Colombia would be tricky, but I know several people who have driven from Texas down to Panama, no problem. You would need to investigate guide books for each country and plan your route with care. And yes, Colombia could be tricky, although the rebels are only part of the problem, and you can plan around those areas. The road system in Colombia isn't too great. "Highways" tend to be pretty much one lane in each direction, with lots of cars, trucks, buses, etc. all passing one another with reckless abandon. It can take a very long time to cover a relatively short distance here. (It has taken me 10-12 hours to drive from Cucuta to Bogota (a distance of ~ 400 miles).
I also know people who have driven from Colombia to Patagonia, so, it can definitely be done. You'd probably want to take a 4x4 if you do make this trip. |

Bad, bad idea. It's often not safe outside of cities, and if your car breaks down in a rural area, you'd be screwed (it can be very hard to find a mechanic). Robbery is common, and the rural roads are often in very poor condition. Border officials may expect bribes from you, and it can be hard to find a safe hotel outside of cities. |
