Going to South America in November for 3 months? |
With boyfriend (age 26,27). We plan to spend 1 of the 3 months in Buenos Aires in an apartment, but keep debating on how we should spend our last 2 months after that. We want to see Iguazu Falls, wine country (maybe) and other things nearby, but not sure what we have time for (Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Uruguay?). Not interested in going north (Columbia, Ecuador, Venezuela). Also, we will be flying back out of BA so we can't travel too far unless we take flights within the continent. I'm traveling with a 40L backpack, so lots of flexibility for travel.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Additional Details I'm into people watching/sitting outside at a cafe/outdoorsy stuff. Not much for spending hours in a museum or shopping. Love to dance, see live music, and eat! |

If from BA, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Brasil and Uruguay are close. Even by bus (no reliable train services available!)
* exception, you may want to take the "Tren de las Nubes" or Clouds Train, the highest regular train line in the world!
see below.
Also please consider an air-pass, there are several options. In SouthAmerica your best bet is LAN (LanArgentina, LanChile, LanPeru, etc.) or Gol, Tam in Brasil - NO AA/Aerolines Argentinas, please!
see:

Uruguay via ferry:

If you go around, i.e. clock-wise, you will see, from BA:
South to Patagonia, all the way to Usuahia,
coming up to Calafate and Bariloche (cross to Puerto Montt in Chile)
up to Mendoza (AR) with wines and Aconcagua (highest peak in America), cross to Santiago in Chile, crossing the Andes.
up to Salta and cross to Atacama (desert in Chile's North) and
up to Bolivia
Go East to Paraguay and then the tri-frontier:
Argentina-Brasil-Paraguay with
Iguazzu Falls, Itaipu (one of the largest water dams in the world)
Ciudad del Este in PY/Paraguay, you can everything you can imagine and more very cheap, indeed!
And cross to Brasil's South!
Get down to BA and cross to UY/Uruguay.
Bus is the best option, unless you prefer to do some flying legs.
Remember: take your time, schedules and agendas in SouthAmerica are on a "different time zone"

I'd like to let you and your boyfriend know that I just received advise on an apartment rental agency, http://www.buenosairesstay.com from another Yahoo! member. I called them straight away and have already booked an apartment, arranged for a prepaid cellphone and booked a few tours. The service was excellent. I recommend you contact them and speak with Lorena. Very helpful. |

In buenos aires is plenty of bars , dance clubs and places for music and eat, You got to go to the Recolecta and San Telmo for what are you looking for.
If you are going to Mendoza Argentina for the wineries, you are close to Chile, you can rent a car or go by bus.
Uruguay :you can go to Colonia or montevideo from Buenos Aires, There are Ferry ,Buquebus, aliscafo, bus, or Flight, I will recomend you The aliscafo cause is fast and cheap, in a couple of hours you are thereand you can spend a couple of days in Montevideo and go back to Bs As .
For Bolivia and Peru, I will love to go again , depends of the time you have left. If you have time and money you can flight to La Paz , rent a car there and drive to Lima and Machu Pichu.
The North of Argentina is beatiful too, Salta, Jujuy,Tucuman,OH by the way there are wineries in Salta too in a City called Cafayate Tipical Torrontes wine production zone. |

40 L backpack is very small! :o) Better for you...! :o) 3 months is not too bad but South America is HUGE and the connection often are not great do you should consider 15%20% of this period will be Transfer (at least if you don't want to use airplane all the time...expensive option) You can visit North of Argentina, Salta, Juy juy, purmamarca, iruya, etc etc....then go to Bolivia from Tupiza....They organize very beautiful tours (4 days tours) from over there till the Uyuni salar...Then go up till La paz....then you can visit Titicaca lake (great) go up till Machu pichu...etc.etcf....till Lima and from Lima by plane you can come back to B.A.
It's just an idea
Have fun |
