How much money should I bring to my 3 month trip to Argentina? |
I will traveling all over Argentina and need to know how much I should expect to spend on hostels, food/drink, transportation, and misc. We are landing in Buenos Aries but traveling all over. I figured about $10/night for hostels. But have no idea about how much a day for food/drink. And how much does the bus system cost on average? Thanks! |

Argentina, is very funny! You can live on a shoestring or spend more than in Paris or London!
Public transport, even long distance (bus) is very cheap if compared with NorthAmerica. Forget airplanes and no reliable train service.
And yes USD5.00 can get you into a all-you-can-eat joint and enjoy it.
Hostels, please see:

Bueno Aires is expensive, the interior is usually cheaper.
But remember there is always the "foreigner" factor. That sometimes, even if careful, as everywhere, makes you pay an extra ammount!

Hola! Let me just say my family is from Buenos Aires and I lived/studied abroad there for 4.5 months in 2004 you are going to have so much fun. I did stay with my family for free but as far as going out to eat and going out to bars and such at night i still had extra cash when I left. 10 bucks a night for hostels I would say is def. resonable. I traveled around for a week in the North of Argentina in Salta and there were hostels from 10-20 PESOS a night not even u.s. dollars. Some are dollars but you can find cheap one in pesos.
You can def. find a good meal for only about 30 pesos so 10 U.S. and like the person before said you can get a great sandwhich like milanesa or something for a buck or two.
Let's say you bring 1000 bucks...it will be worth 3000 pesos over there. Our money is worth about 3x theirs so it depends what your budget is but I would say with eating out and staying in hostels and everything you should bring maybe between 1-2000. That might even be extra but better more than not enough. Also...I used my debit card there and it worked perfectly find on any of the ATM machines.
A couple other tips...at the hostels sometimes they provide a meal. We stayed at this one hostel in Salta and paid 10 bucks for the night and got free dinner...fresh salad, asado and all the wine we could drink! INSANE right? So some days you might not have to buy dinner it might be provided.
Also it is illegal to tip in Argentina so when you go to a restaurant you just have to pay your bill and that's it...seems strange i know but I think they get paid more of a wage then the waiters do in most other countries so they do not want you to do. We did tip when we were in Taxis and they did accept it but that is totally up to your own discretion.
Sorry I am rambling but I am so passionate about Argentina as you can tell. If you have any other questions please feel free to email me sweeeetie02@aim.com.
I way there like I said for 4.5 months and only had about 900 bucks and had some left over when I went home. But like I said I stayed with my family for free. But I did go out to eat and to bars and stuff and bought souvineirs and still had extra cash. |

Hi! I'm argentina. Well, for food it depends... you can at for USD 1 (a sandwich) or USD30/40 a good meal, like an asado or something like pastas, meat.
besides depends were you will go. The prices are cheaper in buenos Aires, Cordoba, in the north; but in the patagonia is a little more expensive..
One coca of 500cm3 costs aprox 1 dolar.
good luck in your jorney!! I wish you like my country! kisses |
