I'm American and planning on moving to ARGENTINA!! Help & Advise please!!? |
I was born in the USA and have lived here all my life. My current boyfriend is Argentinean and he is planning to move back in February 09'. We are planning to get married and move to Buenos Aires Argentina together. I'm willing to leave my family and my life here in the USA behind, for him. How is Argentina like? He tells me that we will be fine, and that we can both find really good jobs since we both speak perfect english, Is this true? He also says that the economy in Argentina is getting better by the day, and that its a beautiful place to live in. I'm also worried about the language. I speak perfect spanish, but argentineans speak a bit different from the spanish i'm used to, being that my parents are cuban. I need the HONEST truth about Buenos Aires, Argentina please! Can we find good jobs and live a good life over there? How are the people? I need as much honest info from Argentina as i can get, please.
Thank you so much.
*We would be living in
Villa Urquiza, Buenos Aires
Argentina. |

ok..where to start...
Some people have made really good points.
The one comment that caught my attention was the one regarding the whole "I'm American" and yes I agree that once you come down here, I suggest not saying that because in Argentina and most other latin American countries, we are taught that America is a continent, not a country.
On the other hand, yes, Buenos Aires is simply spectacular. The city is amazing and you will have a great time. Now, the one thing that isn't great is the lack of security. The city is extremely dangerous and like someone else said, everyday people are robbed, murdered, etc. Make sure you are aware of this before you make a decision. Also, keep in mind that while your husband might say it's going to be great, he is biased because like most of us answering this question, he is argentinean. As much as I love my country, I cannot lie to you. Make sure you are well informed and willing to leave the US where we take our physical safety for granted and get used to watching your back 24/7.
Best of luck to you guys. |

I have been living here for the past 5 years. The economy here in Argentina is not getting better IMHO its getting worse right now there is lots of inflation and the peso was at like 3.08 in August of last year to like 3.2x now. So the economy is not getting better here how can it when the worldwide economy is on a downturn?
As of employment opportunities I dont have much info on that cause I own my own business here. So I guess if you have marketable skills in demand yes you can find a job but still not sure. Being fluent in english and spanish is plus. Business wise for me to be honest I have done more in total sales this year then last BUT with all the inflation and stuff my profit margin is roughly the same. Oh and as for your employment question remember if you can get a job that pays you in dollars do that cause of the current exchange for the peso.
But the cost of living here in Argentina is real cheap if you compare it to the states. If you have any other questions mail me or pm me and I will try my best to answer them. |

This is for your boyfriend:
Esta tremendo Buenos aires yo te dirĂa que hasta que Cristina Fernandez (la actual presidenta)no deje de precidir, no te conviene venir (es una opinion)cada uno hace lo que quiere flaco.

First at all don't say 'I'm american', is very offensive for most of the people, because America has more than twenty countries... is not a good passport if you start to know people down here. |

As another responder said, if you can get a job from the U.S. that allows you to work remotely and get paid in U.S. dollars, that is best because of the exchange rate. The inflation is crazy. Regardless of the official numbers, which no one believes, it's relatively 30% per year. The unemployment is much higher than in the U.S., but getting better. Whether or not you can get a "good" job, depends on what qualifies as "good" and whether or not you have marketable skills. With little more than your language skills, I don't think you'd have a problem getting a decent job in a call center. |

I just moved to Buenos Aires from Atlanta and I must say this city is absolutely AMAZING. As far as the economy goes, idk if its getting better, but the fact that you are bilingual should make it a lot easier to find a job. I would definitely have a job lined up down here beforehand, because if you found a job that paid in Dollars you would be in very good shape. The Spanish here is definitely different, some say its actually closer to Italian. This doesnt mean you will have too much of a problem though. In my experience, people usually know what you are talking about even if Argentines use a different word. I highly suggest picking up a phrase book called "Che Boludo", which does a very good job explaining the lingo used here (worked wonders for me).
I wouldnt let the safety thing scare you away from this city, because if you are smart and aware of your surroundings you should be good. It is not too much more dangerous than living downtown in some major US cities in my opinion. Dont walk around alone late, dont carry too much money on you, and be mindful of pickpockets. Buenos Aires is known as "the Paris of South America", so you will not be disappointed with the city itself, it is Beautiful. On the upside, the nightlife here is out of this world! When you get down here be sure to come hang out with us on the Buenos Aires Pub Crawl! Its a great way to explore the city's nightlife and meet people from all over the world. Hope this helps!
Good luck with your move!
