Is Palermo Soho, Buenos Aires a safe neighborhood?

I am thinking about renting a place there for a Winter vacation.

I am going to Buenos Aires to study this July for a month and I actually am praying that my host family will live in my "dream house" which happens to be a nice Parisian looking apartment in Palermo, Palermo Soho, REcoleta and Belgrano. There happens to be an abundance of them. Also, a luxurious town house would be nice as well. You can kind of get the jist of what I am saying- Palermo Soho is very safe. Buenos Aires as a whole is just set up differently than other South American cities. It is a very elegant and pleasant area. Argentina as a whole is very safe and liberal reflecting on the ideals of its people.

Stinkybum
The safety of Buenos Aires is misrepresented. It is supposedly very dangerous, but Ive never had any problems there- not even walking alone at night (and Im blonde, little, and female!).

Palermo Soho is probably one of the safest neighbourhoods and is an affluent one. It is relatively close to the Microcentro and has good transport, great food, awesome nightlife, and good shopping.

You´ll be definitely safe. Excercise common sense and avoid the usual dark alleys etc, but other than that, Palermo Soho is good.

Good luck!

Yes it is very safe. It is a very affluent area and the people are friendly. In fact, most of Buenos Aires is very safe. A lone woman could walk the streets at night and not encounter any trouble. Just use normal 'big city' precautions such as keeping an eye on valuable and being aware of pickpockets on metro trains and in crowded areas.

Alex
Buenos Aires, as any big city, might be unsafe if you do not take precautions. I would not recommend to walk late at night alone in Palermo... It shouldn't be dangerous but you never know. I am from Argentina, Buenos Aires and think that, even though the city is all in all safe there are some dangerous places (i.e. The Woods of Palermo for example where a friend of mine wash robbed with a weapon while jogging).

Lula
Yes sure ! Is the most chick neighborhood in Buenos Aires, there live all the actors and rich families. Any way if you don't rent anything I would recommend you the hostel "Che Lagarto", is not in Palermo but is well located and it's really good, it's full of other English people, and from other country's, the service it's good and the people incredible, and as you are going to spend a quite much time may be is better to stay in a hostel so you will make friend easily, is better for starting friendships a hostel than may be if you live alone on a flat.
So anyway both options are good, but I would choose che Lagato hostel
I wish you spend a great time, is a really nice trip.

Caballito is one of the safest neighborhood in Buenos Aires for Argentineans. Generally, tourists are packed and sent to Palermo, Recoleta and San Telmo by tour operators and travel agencies. They are nice neighborhoods but you will feel around the world except in Argentina :o) ... Anyway Buenos Aires is beautiful and fun so...if you want to feel the real Argentinean spirit or you want to feel like a tourist...you'll hav a great stay as well.

jamiesuec
I feel that all of the Palermo neighborhood are safe. Though, a lot of the rental agencies will call something "Palermo" and it's really not IN Palermo. Plus, the sub neighborhoods aren't that clearly defined. But, if the agency you deal with (or the person) seems fairly trustworthy, then you'll probably be fine with whatever they consider to be Palermo. That entire area is largely safe and around other safe areas. I'm a woman from America living here alone and I've felt comfortable almost for my entire stay. You just have to be a little street smart. You don't want to rent anything in La Boca and in San Telmo there are some areas that are dangerous at night, but Palermo should be fine.
This is a great place to spend the winter!
