I live in Uruguay, border country with Argentina and we are quite similar to them.
In spite of being recognized as "meat eatters", we are not extremaly that way , I mean, we eat meat yes, but in Argentina specially exist what I can call "fitness minds and body". That means that people there is always taking care of being fit and good looking, etc, etc, and so they do with what they eat. You will find a lot of vegetarian or healthy food restaurants and similar, and you will find millons of "light" or fat free products from yogourt, cheese, etc, etc. We have a large variety of vegetables and fruits so you won´t have any problems in Argentina Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay or Chile.
I heard that people consider we are indians, but you will see we are completly the opposite as soon as you arrive in Buenos Aires (argentinian capital city)

Buenos Aires is the most European city I've been outside Europe, including their gastronomy.

You'll find cafés and great restaurants everywhere, there you can enjoy all kinds of salads, vegetarians dishes, the biggest and most attractive fruits. Even the "grill/BBQ" stands in the food courts of the malls have great salad bars, so don't just check those out of your list, just because they say "Beef".

And please, don't leave Argentina without having a grilled Provoletta! They grill a thick slice of Provolone cheese and season it with olive oil and spices and herbs (lots of oregano and paprika) and tastes like heaven...

Being from Venezuela myself, I can tell you that Hollywood has not helped Latin America that much. They show in movies that everything below California and Texas is lazy people in big sombreros that eat strange animal and insects, ride buses filled with hens on dust roads and land in airports without A/C, with pigs running all over the place and immigration and custom officials with the most terrible scars in their faces.

Hopefully people get to travel outside the States a little more and prove them wrong.

Have a nice trip...

of course not! their second favorite thing after meat is pasta and pizza (beware of the cheese overdose!!). they also have great salads and they are a major producer of soybeans so you can find them pretty much in every store.
just make sure you ask for "verduras" specifically in your pasta, etc. or say sin carne (that means red meat to them), sin pollo (that's chicken) and sin mariscos/pescado (seafood/fish), depending on your preferences...

for the rest of south america, pretty much the same goes.. just check what's in everything before you order and you'll be fine.. there are many options.

My friend is in Argentina her name is Diana but she loves meat, and animals=meat

Well, I actually LIVE in Argentina, and I've been a vegetarian for over 12 years, now. And I don't suffer any persecution for that. As a matter of fact, there are shops that specialise in vegetarian food. So, don't worry, and come here. You'll be okay.

And I haven't checked about the rest of South America, but I'm sure that if there were a problem with being a vegetarian somewhere else in the continent, I'd know.

Shack_65
Not exactly

Yes, Impossible..They force feed you to eat beef and Chicken when you get off the Airplane.
A terrible practice, I agree. I would rather go to Hawaii and get a Lei.

I´m living and was born in Argentina , and I´ve been a vegetarian for more than 10 years, and I had no problem at all so far.
By the way, we don´t usually eat refried beans, as someone said, that must be probably in some other southamerican country.

Shining Star
No, since South America is very fertile and has lots of vegetables.

Not at all. You just need to be careful with refried beans.

It was easy in Veneuzla to eat vegetarianly. I didn;t but others with me did either because they believed in it or were afraid of the meat there.
