I went last summer (winter there) and Palermo is like the super upscale part of Bs. As. If one of both of you speak Spanish you're a lot less likely to get into trouble. There are dangers, but mostly it will be in the form of men who are very forward and pushy when it comes to getting the ladies and they will say nasty things at you (but generally they are gentlemanly enough not to touch you without your permission). Also the streets are in pretty bad disrepair so watch your step - the tiles of the sidewalk tend to be lose, especially on Avenida 9 de Julio. Crossing the street is about the most dangerous thing you can do (SERIOUSLY) in Bs. As. - the drivers, especially the taxi drivers, are very reckless. The homeless population is pretty large and they'll beg of you. If you speak with an accent people will try to rip you off and assume you are a rich foreigner. The subways are pretty safe, the buses are kinda sketchy.

Palermo, Ricoletta, and Puerto Madero are very safe. Use common sense for the most part. It's no more dangerous than any other big city and actually has a pretty low crime rate given the population density.

Please take a weekend trip to Iguazu. It's absolutely the most beautiful place I've ever been.

Buenos Aires is a big city so you have to watch yourself like in another city, a part from that you and your friend will really enjoy your time here. You will have a lot of things to do and places to visit, not only in Buenos Aires if you have the chance to go to the beach or to the south like Calafate, Usuahia or Mendoza, go, also to the north like Salta or Jujuy, it´s beautiful.

Mia
I agree with the other. The city is as safe as other big cities.

I would also like to add
- Stay out of the non-touristy section of La Boca
- Watch out for kids pickpocketing you and coming into the bars at night.

BsAs is great place. I love it. Have fun!!!

Same precautions, as travelling (as a foreigner) any-where in the world.

Do not carry much cash
Use your ATM card to obtain necessary cash at local currency
Avoid late nights, prefer early mornings to return home
Be aware of your surroundings.
Try to get, from reliable (fellow travellers) sources, the places to go and not to go.

Palermo is safe.
