I am from Patagonia, and I can confirm that you will find cold weather down-there for sure. The average temperature in El Calafate (Perito Morenos's City) is around 30 degrees Fahrenheit (0 Celsius) during July. (http://search.weather.yahoo.com/climo/ARSC0134_c.html).

The best time of the year to visit Perito Moreno is February when you would enjoy better weather and you will see a huge pieces of ice falling apart from the Perito Moreno.

A good option for July in Patagonia is Bariloche and the Lakes in Northern Patagonia. The weather is still cold, but it is not as severe as in Santa Cruz (Southern Patagonian province where Perito Moreno is located). There is also "El Bolson", 130 miles away Bariloche a beautiful destination with a milder micro-weather that has gained some reputation as a hidden paradise since some celebrities such as Stallone, Ted Turner or Benetton bought states there. The best time to visit this region is mid August, but if you have to travel during July, try to push it for the latest date you can.

Good luck.

Perito Moreno in July isn't a good idea, because you will encounter tremendous winds, plenty of snow, and very short days. My advice is to stay as far north as possible, as Patagonia is really only tolerable from early November to late March. It is one of the most blustery, wild landscapes on earth. In the summer, the sun shines until 10:30 pm, making travel there seem other worldly. You could go to Igauzu Falls, Buenos Aires, Bariloche (great skiing), and the other areas in the Lake District where the days will still have reasonable length and the cold weather will offer plenty of things to do.

Puerto Modero, maybe. Buenas Aires is beautiful year round.

July at Perito Moreno in Argentina is like going to Alaska in February. If you are ready to accept very cold weather you will enjoy it.
Spend more time in my home town (Buenos Aires) you’ll enjoy it there a lot!
