Ask the relatives that live there if they know anybody your age/close to your age. They can show you around to areas that will appeal to you, and can introduce you to other people your age.
A lot of people here speak english, and most schools require the kids to learn english, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem with communication. But like any person going to another country, you should learn at least the basics so you're not lost.
It'll be easy to adapt, but you should be with people who know spanish in the beginning and who live there so they can show you around. Have fun :D |

I Go Buenos Aires
 |
There are always people around who speak Spanish, but the best is to take some classes.
A great school is Lenguas Nativas (sorry, don't know the site, google it?) in San Telmo.
They are just now requiring people to study English, so if you really want to integrate and avoid tourist traps, learn some Spanish. Most times anything offered in English costs more.
The culture is REALLY similar to Barcelona or Madrid. Most Argentines are Italian and Spanish descendants, so it is pretty much a offshoot of those two cultures.
You can visit some expat sites for guiding around. Generally they are locals who come from other countries, so they have expertise on both things.
I did some activities with I Go Buenos Aires, which were fun. I actually met one of my really good friends there (who is from Argentina). So, they were helpful.
Also try getting a job at a local bar. I believe Casa Bar, Alamos, and some others generally require very limited Spanish and are great places to met people.
Soccer games may be hard as many guys play with the same team from their neighborhoods their whole lives. Check out Craigslist where people often are looking for similar things as you are. |
