What are cool things to do in Buenos Aires?

Me and a friend will be traveling to Buenos Aires in early March of 2009. We're both relatively young guys at 25 and are looking for things to do. We will only be in B.A. for 7 nights and are then traveling to Uruguay for an additional 5 nights. Tours are fine but I would much rather do my own thing and stay off the beaten path. Unless it is an off the beaten path type of tour of course. Besides, we are on a budget and side trips to Mendoza or Patagonia are probably too expensive and time consuming. If anyone has any advice on local restaurants, bars, activities...etc. it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I Go Buenos Aires
Hey Kramer,
You guys will have a great time!

I think you would have a great time on two different things
First, you would dig a pub crawl. There are several different groups in town who do this, most emphasize large groups of tourist. While fun, this doesn´t seem like your type of thing.
Try the pub crawl we have. These are basically groups of Argentine friends willing to take people out. Luckily, you actually save money by doing a pub crawl versus having to pay for drinks and then cover charges at the nightclubs.
Secondly, check out Tigre. There is a tour that goes to Tigre, but than takes you out wakeboarding. You spend the day on the beach (yes, only one in the area) with lunch, wakeboarding, playing volleyball, and kayaking. Its a really off the beaten path type way to see things.

The website is listed below for you to check out.

Have a killer time in Buenos Aires!

PS- If you are budget concious, you are right, Patagonia would be out of your league. Mendoza is an 18 hour, >$150US round trip bus ride. Its a nice city but if you only have 7 days you would be overextending yourselves on time.

Buenos Aires is filled with cool things to do... every day and night there are free shows, music events and parties. Monday nights are awesome at La Bomba de Tiempo which goes from about 8-11. It is a huge drumming show that will really get you moving :) http://labombadetiempo.blogspot.com/ - this is the site for the show
Also, I suggest doing your own walking tour starting at the Plaza de Mayo and walking down Defensa or Bolivar into San Telmo. There are really cool shops and museums to stop by on your way...here is a good link to a list of things to see in Plaza de Mayo and San Telmo:

Also, if youre looking to go to Uruguay I suggest Colonia because it is cheap and really laid back. Im sure you'll have a blast!

Why don't you BUY A TOUR GUIDE BOOK? They are well worth the small price and a whole lot more informative than asking here on Answers where 95 percent of the people have never been outside the State where they were born.

I was there in January and there is a great and cheap restaurant called La Vaca. It is pretty much accross the street from the parliament buildings. All the taxi drivers know where it is, and taxis are VERY cheap. They have all you can eat tenderloin steaks and it comes with a pitcher of beer per person or a bottle of wine. This costs about $10. There are lots of nice areas to visit, but we really enjoyed Recoleta and La Boca. La Boca is where the Boca Juniros stadium is and it is a very colorful and artsy area. You can sit down at a cafe there and drink and eat for good prices. You can also take a tour of the stadium, which I definitely recommend. Calle Florida is a great place for shopping, if you are into that. Mostly leather for sale there. There is a pub called Liverpool relatively close to Calle Florida that was a lot of fun and on that same street, there are a few more clubs.
