They're Asians, or also, Austronesians.
>>Usage Dispute
Inhabitants of the Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Filipino, and Indonesian islands, although technically bordering the Pacific Ocean, do not fall under the definition of "Pacific Islanders" because such islands are not located in any of the three regions of Oceania (Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia), and are therefore classified as "Asians" on the U.S. Census. Despite this, a growing number of Filipino-Americans have denied the classification of being "Asian", instead claiming to be "Pacific Islanders", which has provoked dismay among some Pacific Islanders who actually belong to the Oceanic cultures comprising the commonly accepted definition of the term, and has also prompted allegations of cultural denial from other Filipinos, the worldwide majority of whom identify themselves as being Asian (as the Filipino government has stated since its foundation that the Philippines is a part of Asia). However, it should be noted that both groups, as well as aboriginals from Taiwan, other countries of Maritime Southeast Asia (including Indonesia), and the Madagascar Malagasy are all closely related ethnically and can be grouped together under one umbrella term, the Austronesians. |

Filipinos born in the Phillipines are asians.
Filipinos,Guamanian, Chinese, Japanese,(any asian country in the far east) born in Hawaii are Pacific Islanders.
The phrase Pacific Islander is the term the U.S. Govt. adopted
for any "American Citizen" that has any asian descent. Another way of saying your from Hawaii since Hawaii has many asian people living there that moved to different states in the U.S. |

Filipinos are Asians because our country is in the continent of Asia. Pacific Islanders are the inhabitants of the many, many islands (e.g., New Guinea, Fiji, Cook Islands, etc.) that dot the Pacific Ocean. |

Pacific Islanders is theterm. most popular term. For some reason, they consider people from Japan, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, and Vietnam to be true Asians rather than Filipinos. The term Pacific Islander seems to say something about the geographical location. I guess that they believe that we are more of a Hispanic race rather than "true Asians" even if a lot of Filipinos have blood relations from different races especially with the Chinese and Japanese. Filipinos are Asians but I guess that they usually use Pacific Islanders whenever you have to fill out an official survey form. Beats me what it means. |

Sirrah is correct: Filipino's are Asian not Pacific Islanders.
Even though the Philippines is located in the Pacific Ocean its people are not deemed to be Pacific Islanders.
The Pacific Ocean contains an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 islands; the exact number has not been precisely determined. These islands are also sometimes collectively called Oceania (although Oceania usually also includes Australia and New Zealand), and are traditionally grouped into three: Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Inhabitants are sometimes referred to as Pacific Islanders.
Melanesia means black islands. These include New Guinea (the largest Pacific island, which is divided into the nation of Papua New Guinea and the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Irian Jaya), New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands
Micronesia means small islands. These include the Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
Polynesia means many islands. These include New Zealand, the Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, the Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and Easter Island.
There are also many other islands located within the boundaries of the Pacific Ocean, but these are not considered part of Oceania. These islands include the Galápagos Islands of Ecuador; the Aleutian Islands in Alaska; the Russian islands of Sakhalin and Kuril Islands; Taiwan; the Philippines; the South China Sea Islands; most of the islands of Indonesia; and the island nation of Japan, which includes the Ryukyu Islands. However, it should be noted that the inhabitants of these islands are not considered to be Pacific Islanders and are usually identified with their nearest continent. |

well, if you're speaking to an aeta (aboriginal filipinos),then you are a pacific islander. but if you're speaking to the majority (malays, chinese-filipinos, and even those mixed white-filipinos), they're asians. like me, i'm a filipino with both spanish and chinese origins. i'm an asian and am proud to be one. |

The Ayeta would best be describes as Pacific Islanders, since they did not mix with the influx of settlers from the Asian mainland and other islands - therefore retaining their own bloodlines.
Other Filipinos are Asian, as they are descended from Malay,Chinese etc settlers.
Geographically, I suppose you could say they are either. But biologically, Asian. |

Filipinos are asians because of its mixed races from the native we known in gradeschool as Ita's or the negritos, by invasion or expansions of kingdoms from the nearby teritories, the Indons people can and sort of pushed away the Ita's on the scene and to their local teritories. Later on with changes and some fights along with the continouos trade the Malay's came and soon pushed back the Indon's.
This all happen before the Americans, Japanese, Spaniards, Chinese came to us. I dont think there are pacific Islanders mentioned in the History. Generally, Filipino's are mixed asian races and as more colony occupied Philippines it turns out to be another Fil-Hispanic-American Race or something like that.
By that time there is no such thing as Pacific Islanders nor Pacific Ocean. I believe they called us as the Oriental or Eastern. Pacific was only used YEARS AFTER the expeditions of magellan wherein he ruled out that the world is round. |
