Some are, but the VAST majority simply are uninformed as to the nature & scope of the Japanese take and how it is viewed internationally.

Are there many people concerned by saving the planete, protecting the environment. It's not a japanese fact, there isn't only whales concerns. It's a worlds fact, who dare being concerned ???

When I was there, I don't remember people talking about it much.

I'd guess that they either don't think about it at all, or if they do think about it, most of them think it's okay.

Whale meat was a popular food in Japan for centuries, and even today, it's still considered a delicacy though not as popular as in the past.

about as concerned as the average aussie is on the topic of being the only country in the world which kills and eats both the animals on its national emblem (kangaroo and emu). i work in the southern ocean and let me tell you minke whales are very common - sort of like kangaroos are in australia. if you want something to ***** about then why dont we stop aussie fisherman from plundering our fish stocks - has anyone heard of quota,s? what do you think happens to the fish caught over quota - you cant tell a fish not to get into your net because he,s not on the quota list. yes they are thrown back - not alive though.at least the japanese stick to the quota and kill no more.

As whales increase, fish resources show drastic decrease. It is like keeping wolves in the sheep yard. I am against whaling but their population should be controlled not by whaling but by some other means.

Actually we can say that most ppl doesn't think about it today.
But we have had that custom since long time before. Norway, Iceland and Faroe islands, UK has same custom.

World should know and see exact data of the influence of the habits of whale and the effect of whaling.

Surely there is a way to make them see the uproar they are creating and the consequences of their actions.

Some are. I'm Japanese and a Scuba diver so I'm more familiar than most Japanese. However as mentioned most Japanese are not very familiar with the subject. I don't think it's "Japan" that is pushing for opening of whaling, it's what is left of the Japanese whaling industry lobbying for support internationally. Yes the Japanese government is supporting them but that's because as stated most people aren't familiar about whaling.

As the result of a survey shows, not many Japanese know what is International Whaling Commission (IWC), not such people don't know what Japanese government are doing with whaling people at (IWC).

And It is true that many Japanese people are tolerant about few Japanese people supported by Japanese government which have been doing few whaling in every year for research purpose
And they are also tolerant about occasionally some of many Japanese have been eating whale meat dishes at particular restaurants and at Japanese pubs which serve whale meat dishes.

But many of Japanese had experience of eating whale meat dish occasionally in the past, and think whale meat is hard meat ,and taste is unique, and not much delicious, therefore they are not much interested in eating whale meat again, so Japanese people wonder why people in other countries get angry that much to Japanese and accuse ethics of Japanese.

And some of them wonder that Japanese gov. have been insisting re-starting commercial whaling is whether public opinion of Japanese or not , however, many Japanese can not say whether whaling is evil easily because whaling is one of Japanese traditional culture.

Whaling issues are sometimes on TV news and also on variety of news papers in Japan. You can input the word "whaling" to the search engine on this home page of Japan Times ,a English news paper in Japan. and check how many news about wailing are posted. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/

And also many Japanese people are busy and they must pay attention to many other news and many other complicated issues including collection of garbage by type,
recycling of pet bottles, particles of asbestos, global warming, emission controls. They also have many other complaints, which are more related to the themselves to bureaucratic Japanese government. And many Japanese people also have many things to do like other countries people do.

However, since commercial whaling are banned in world wide, I believe many Japanese have been not eating whale for years or decade regardless they can afford to eat whale meat at the restaurants specialized whale meat dishes.

Do you know that whaling are Japanese traditional culture, and whaling by Japanese is not only for whale oil, but also every part of whales body including their meat?

There are many web sites about whale and whaling in which few Japanese people and Japanese government inspire the general public to eat whale meat dish again with showing whale meat menus and recipes that use whale meat (e.g. whale meat sandwiches). It seems that they want restore or protect a Japanese traditional culture, whaling and eating whale meat.
And It is also true that some old people who used to eat whale meat and familiar with whaling feel nostalgia or recollection of a Japanese traditional culture-whaling.

However, one of the critical reason that Japanese had been eating whale for decade or longer time of period after World War 2 is that whale meat was cheap, and most Japanese citizen were so poor and chose buying and eating whale meat for the source of animal protein, therefore, many Japanese people doubt about the opinions by Japanese gov. and whaling people in which Japanese should eat whale meat to preserve their traditional culture because nowadays, Japan is no longer starvation, and people can choose many other alternatives such as beef, chicken, fish, port and etc. (as you know whale is not fish)

In conclusion,ã€€Although some pictures of whale meat dishes posted on Japanese websites look delicious, those don't attract many Japanese because in their memory the meat was hard meat, and they don't think they are going to eat a lot ,however, they are also tolerant to Japanese people whaling ,and some people who want to eat whale meat occasionally because it is part of Japanese Traditional culture.

When I was a student of elementary school in Japan, the fried wheal meat marinated by soy sauce was occasionally served at school lunch. The meat was always very hard meat and very difficult to bite off. I felt it was terrible tasteas well, so I didn't like it. but all students had to eat it because teachers always said students that don't leave anything on their plate, and the school lunch had only one menu in a day.

I already spent hours and days to write this, am tired editing this...
