Are people in the Philippine nice?

I am not filipino but I have friends that are and we are going there in a few weeks for Spring Break. Are foriengers welcome there? I have heard of Americans being beaten up and treated badly.... Is this true?

Are white people welcome? What about African Americans or Latinos?

Should I be worried? I would actually like to move there with friends soon for college? Should I?

I like the Philippines, I find the people usually warm and friendly. Filipinos are often well educated and communicate in English pretty adequately.

Like all countries every now and then you run into a bad egg but you cannot generalize and condemn an entire nation for a few klinkers!

I don't see much difference in how white, black or latino tourists are treated! When it comes to tourists and them spending lots of money - any skin color is okay!

Like all big cities be wary of people being too "over friendly" to you. I only stay in hotels that have security box storage and I use that storage for my money and important stuff. It is not the hotel staff that I am wary of, it is the fellow tourists next door who may be thieves!

Don't flash money around, if you are careless and obvious in your display of wealth - someone may take it from you - just like back in your own hometown!

Being a female you have to be more careful of who you trust your hotel key to! If you leave on trips with a tour company or with new friends let your other friends or relatives know who you are with and where you are going. Some women who are going on tours tell the hotel who they are with and when they are coming back for insurance.

Moving to the Philippines is an entire different matter than a simple tourist type trip. Moving there after college is something you have to consider seriously! Wages are lower, some things are different than what you are accustomed to back home, politics for instance! You also have to have a source of income, perhaps working for a foreign company would keep you in the same income bracket. But you would have to compete with educated Filipinos who can do the same job, maybe at lower wages too!

Good luck, have a good time.

filipinos very, very nice to everyone. we're not picky about colors. our hospitality extends to all races. nothing to worry about. enjoy your spring break!!!!!!!

KING
nah stories are fake....
we dont look on colors

Magic Mouse
I'm sure there are some bad apples, but my experience is that they are very kind people. I would be careful, but prepare to be treated with extreme kindness (-;

Danielle
It actually depends on where or what area will you be staying on living in. Some Filipino's would take advantage of foreigners but all you need to do is just be careful. Nothing is safe in this world.

Filipinos are known for their hospitality. i'm sure they will give you a warm welcome. those stories you hear, those are probably psychos who did stupid things. every country has them and the philippines isn't any different.

kasperhollics
I am a Filipino and all I can say is that Filipinos are very hospitable. But before you go to any places, always ask someone if it is safe to go. Know the place that you are going be living in. It is better to rent a car. Filipinos are very friendly. Visit Alabang town Center in Muntinlupa City, you will meet a lot of white people there. Ayala Alabang is a safe place.
College is also good, lots of fraternities by the way and im afraid they are not the same as in American Colleges. So stay away from them. Americans, African Americans, Latinos, Europeans, etc. are always welcome in the Philippines.
And be sure to check out the tourists spots like Palawan, Boracay, Bohol etc. check out the site.
Trust me, you will have a lot of fun specially that you have Filipino friends! Good luck!

yes they are very nice. but you really can't generalize. just like most people from around the world they have different personalities, too. so just be careful as you would be when you are walking alone in the dark streets of NYC or from any other city. ;)

First of all you have very little to be worried about. White people are much welcomed there because there are so many of them there all the time. Not only that the Philippines has had a long history with westerners and true there are stories where people do run into misfortune but those are far between. As long as your smart and respectfull about the way you behave in public then you will be fine. You will get the occasional person staring abit but thats normal. The worst that could happen to you is being overcharged which I must admit happens alot because your white. They will think your rich.

As far as moving there for college is concerned I would give that a miss. The system is better established in america and plus their qualifications aren't recognised in the states. I suggest you go there for a nice long holiday and nothing more. If you need any more info please give me a buzz as I imagine you need more information about the whole place in general.

there are nice ones & there are hustlers, same as everywhere else. the nice ones far outnumber the not so nice. the problem is nice people generally mind their own & dont go about meeting strangers, while many bad people do. hence the bad rep.
but if youre just careful & use common sense, theres no reason not to have a great time.
& regarding african americans & latinos, the only difference would be that filipinos may be more curious about them, especially kids, they might stare. but yes, everyone is welcome

I find it funny at the same time ridiculus of what you said that americans getting beaten up in the Philippines. The Filipinos are the most friendliest people in the world. The most hospitable and generous people. It is not by choice that they have these traits , they are born with it.

People of any color or creed are very much welcome in the Philippines. Believe you me they will welcome you with open arms.

If you and your friends are planning to study in the Philippines better check out some guides for Filifino foster families who would be glad to adopt you while you are studying there in college. I heard that they do it with Koreans, Chinese, Japanese students who are studying in the Philippines right now.

I have found all Filipinos to be very friendly, and i have never felt unsafe - that may have something to do with being nearly 6' and over 210Ibs though.

But seriously, just be sensibly cautious. If someone is too friendly, they probably want more than a conversation. Dont wear jewellery, expensive clothes, carry cameras / phones etc. Carry money split between pockets and never in a wad. Be careful at night away from the business/ tourist areas.

Heck there are no reported serial killers in this country (true, check our website), unlike in other countries, there are no crazy students who will shoot you inside your universities, NO bioterrorism, NO SECRET government agents to get you. No president getting assassinated.

I've never heard of Americans getting beaten up here, in fact (no offense) it's the other way around. Foreigners, especially before, sold our children as sex slaves in other countries, a US marine was convicted for raping a Filipina (just in 2007 I think), Japanese men during World war 2 killed, raped, tortured many of our people. But now we are no longer pushovers.

The Philippines has the niciest people. There were even studies done to prove these and the Philippines were in one of the top spots. We are very hospitable, that's our trait. We don't care about color or creed because we ourselves are discriminated before. Don't got anxious when Filipinos look at you or stare at you when you get here, it only means that we like you guys.

We are also happy people. Some study showed that the Philippines is in the top 10 of happiest people (study released in 2007 I think among 170+ countries). Don't worry about language too, there are more english speakers here than in Australia or Canada.

The one who mentioned not to go here is probably a guy who hasn't been here, obviously. And a prejudiced regarding 3rd world countries, all I can say to him is to look at oneself before judging others.

Yes it's true there are crimes done here but what country don't have crimes, there can be a low crime rate, but never zero crime rate in an entire country (in fact in Metro Manila there are days when the crime rate is actually zero, that's when our boxers fight in international contests).

Goodluck to you and hope you come here.

Be very careful who you choose to be with. The Philippines is a very poor place. The people who most want to make friends with you are likely to be the ones who want to take everything you have. Yes, believe all the stories you read or hear. I heard of a Japanese man who was almost run over by the same person who was his guide ( to steal his belongings). Stay together and don't go out at night.
