Yes. If you left the Philippines on 2001, nothing much has changed.

The biggest in-thing in shopping are the Mall of Asia, largest in the entire Asia-Pacific, as well as the Bonifacio Global City, which is now developed fully by now. Eastwood City and Rockwell Center are also fully functional by now. There is also the new Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway which connects the North Luzon Expressway to Tarlac.

The news nowadays is dominated mainly by either boxing champion Manny Pacquiao or President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Politicians are now scrambling about who is to be the next president of the Philippines. Billionaire Senator Manuel Villar and tough Manila Chairman Bayani Fernando. Also, there are lots of people trying to make Gloria Arroyo's government fall.

Also, the biggest news today is the Bicol earthquake - ever since Friday up to now (Wednesday), there has been earthquakes every hour in Bicol that makes all the people there very dizzy.

The government has now signed a deal with Muslim groups that will eventually lead the way for Mindanao independence from the Philippines. Although there is now a war in Mindanao. The Muslim separatists now shoot and kill every one they want to kill.

And the Philippines is allowing American and Australian soldiers to build temporary bases in the country in order to counter them.

In terms of people, it is very different now. There are literally thousands of Koreans now living here, as well as Americans and Australians. We now have lots of children with mixed American ancestry - they now comprise the entertainment industry, not the Mestizos anymore.

Economy-wise, the rich people of the Philippines are very happy now as there are literally lots of huge glitzy malls that have sprung out through Manila and new resorts in Luzon, but for the poor, it is terribly much worse. The number of poor people, beggars, homeless, drug addicts, juvenile delinquents, and criminals have soared. Prices are also going up everyday.

Meanwhile, the Philippines is not a third world country anymore. We are now classified as a Newly Industrialized Country (NIC).

So there, as one guy above puts it, the Philippines is really going through a very, very tough time nowadays (BECAUSE of the corrupt politicians) and many of the people here wants one thing - to get away from the country - fast. You can't blame them - things are getting very tough now. (Quite very unlike our prosperous Asian neighbors).

At least, we can still manage here with the help of the Divine Provindence. The Lord is trying to lead those good samaritans in assisting the helpless ones.

yes. and the prices of ALL products are increasing, almost every week i guess. and it is very polluted here. and recently, there is a war at Mindanao.

I'm not from there, but I've been there and I love parts of it. I like to think of it as my second home. My wife is from there and we keep up on the news from various Philippine news websites. Just go to google and type in "News from the Philippines" and you'll catch up in no time at all.

not really, but have been there couple of weeks ago... I was born and raised there, but now I live in the US...

anyway, when I was there, it was pretty much the same... but Manila, and my own city, Dagupan, became much more commercialized and there are more places to go there than before... it became more humid, and more stormy in some sort... but it's still beautiful and nice...

I got lots of relatives and friends there... I had a lot of fun, and I can't wait to go back again!

Philippines just got a bit worst in the part of the economy and the government because of corruption. But i think tourism here soars. Inspite of the negative events happening, pinoys still manage living in this 3rd world country with a smile on their face.
