For many people in Malaysia, I think it is the norm rather than the exception. In other countries, speaking a second language seems to be quite an accomplishment. Regarding that, I am reminded of a silly joke:
Q: What do you call a person who speaks three or more languages?
A: Multilingual
Q: What do you call a person who speaks two languages?
A: Bilingual
Q: What do you call a person who speaks only one language:
A: American

used to be. when i could at least master chinese (my mother tongue) and bm, my favourite language. and well a few other chinese dialects plus english were within my understanding.
but now i am hardly fluent in chinese (either dialect), speak retarded english and can barely manage a smatter of malay.
i am darn ashamed of myself if you asked me.
--
i will tell a story.
someone from malaysia, in fact kk rang me on my mobile yesterday. so i answered and hello hello forever and nobody answered me. so i texted and asked who is this? and i got this reply "say tk ckp orang puti" it took me FOREVER to figure out it meant "i dont speak/understand english" and lol we exchanged a few text messages that got my mind finding the right words in malay. very challenging |

It's definitely an advantage for people like us to live in a multi racial country where you are taught to learn another language rather than just learning the national language or English only for some countries.
So, yeah I wouldn't only say that I'm proud that i can speak more than 1 language (3 to be precise) but I'm glad to learn to speak besides English or ones mother tongue. But learning the national language is also a cool thing.
Definitely an advantage =) |

Yes. It sort of feels normal to me, because I speak it with my mother everyday.
But the time it makes me feel really proud is when I can help someone with it. |

Sigh...you guys are sooo lucky. I can only speak English because each time I try to speak Malay or Chinese I get laughed at in the face. Had I been great with languages as much as you guys, I woulda known English, Malay, Chinese (two dialects), Polish, Punjabi, Urdu.....well done everyone-learning new languages sets you free but not all of us can learn as easily as others. |
