I'm European and I've never been to any of the countries of my origin. And I'm just a second generation American, not so far removed.
I really don't understand why some people (generally those who aren't Asian) just expect that all Asians are direct immigrants from Asian countries! I know a lot of Asians who have never been to their countries of origin but people always ask "do you speak Chinese?". No, they don't, because they're Americans and they speak English. A little bit of high school Spanish. Just like the rest of us!
I really do feel for the Asians I know because of all the strong stereotypes they get pinned to.
Just because you LOOK Asian does not mean that you should be expected to know all about where you come from. Although I'm sure it would be a wonderful experience and a lot of fun, you shouldn't consider it a bad thing. I'm assuming you're American (sorry if you're not), but where you are born is what nationality you are, and you're no different from all the other people born there! |

It's not a bad thing. If you should go to Asia you should go to the place of your ancestor's homeland. |

I am Asian, but i have been to many Asian countries and now living in a western country. My husband is Caucasian. Both of us still prefer to travel in asian countries. The lifestyle is very different, you can see a lot of things 'happening'... Food is fantastic and cheap.
But each asian country is different. If you want to see more advance countries, try Singapore, Beijing and Hong Kong. If u want to see developing countries, Malaysia , Indonesia, Vietnam etc are great (mind you, these country also has the 'advance' side). China is a big country, everywhere is full of history and surprises.. just too much to describe it..
For us, our next trip will be Malaysia - Tioman island, Penang(for food), KL (for shopping), Redang island, Langkawi island...
Just my advice, it's better to avoid public toilet tho(except s'pore and hongkong). :-) |

If you're Asian, can't speak any Asian languages, barely know about the culture then I wouldn't say you're missing anything any typical foreigner would be missing. If you feel however that you can relate to Asian culture, you appreciate Asian tradition etc, then I would encourage you to visit the country to which your parents or grandparents etc are from. Just start from there and follow wherever your heart wants to take you. |

It's not a bad thing. It's just good to get back to your roots. It's good to find answers on why you do the things you do.
Just cause you've never been to Asia does not mean you'll never go.
The food is fantastic in Asia. There's a lot of beautiful beaches there. So much history, so much culture. Because it's so opposite from Western countries, it's very magnetic.
I hope you go someday. Good luck. |

No.
I'm going to assume you live in America, and assuming that:
Why does everyone who has a different skin color other than white think they are so much closer to their nation or culture of origin than whites are? Just because one are white doesn't mean they are "generic" and "bland." I know you didn't say this, but questions like these imply it. I'm part German and French Canadian, but I'm not saying "Is it bad that I've never been to the fatherland?"
I don't mean to be rude, but it seems that "white" has just become a generic term for any stupid American, and anything else is either Asian, African, Hispanic, etc. Whites can be anything from Slavik, hebrew, to German and Welsh. I don't understand why races other than white feel they are so much closer to their roots.
Now, getting to your question, if you have family there or suddenly feel a strong urge to connect, then take a trip there.
ANd if you go there, visit the country of your origin.
For an alternative and possibly better explanation of what I was trying to say, see the above answer of Miss Jinxy. |
