japan is DEFINATELY part of asian
i always get asked, in this order, "are u chinese? r u japanese, r u korean?" ppl definatly consider japan part of asia. take her out and ask about a dozen random ppl or ppl from ur school, do u consider japan part of asia? she'll get it |

lol, ignore your friend, she's confused, Japanese people are Asian, I'm suprised your friend doesn't know that |

I know she's your friend, but it sounds like a bit of anti-Japanese sentiment. This is common among Chinese and Koreans. (if you don't know about this issue, it relates to Japan's war crimes in WWII, Japan's economic success, and other historical encounters between China and Japan) It sounds like she is placing China on a pedestal above Japan, and telling you that Chinese are the "real" Asians. I find that most Americans who do not call Asians "Asian", choose to call them Japanese or Chinese (regardless of what they are). I think the two are equally popular in this respect.
Many Americans confuse China and Japan anyway, so it's difficult to tell what they think. I've seriously heard Americans talking about Communist Japan, South Korea in the Axis of Evil, etc.
If you are feeling bold and really want to know why she says this, maybe you should just ask her straight up: Do you dislike Japan? Why do you insist that it's not part of Asia, when it clearly is?
You're her friend, and you're Japanese. If she is truly your friend, then she should not be talking about your ancestor's homeland as an inferior nation. She has probably disconnected you from Japan in her mind (because she likes you but dislikes Japan). I think if you reconnect them, it'll force her to think seriously about what she is saying; not just about Japan, but about YOU, her friend! |

I would consider Japan part of Asia, but funnily enough when I lived in Japan I met several Japanese people who found such a notion bizarre (possibly old animosity towards China?). But when I think Asia, I think China, Japan, India, Vietnam, Thailand and the other countries in that area, not just the Chinese. |

If your friends are americans, I do understand it completely.
Because a lot of americans are really bad at geography. |

Japan is a part of Asia. People do think of China when they think of Asia, but that's just because China has more people than like...every other country in the world. It's not really a debatable topic, though. Japan = Asia. |

did your friends grow up here in the US? if so it is common and i have experienced the same. as you well know Japan is part of Asia so do not let it bother you. |

I'm asian too, and proud to be. You're friend's just wrong. It's not just Chinese people are Asian. Did ur friend think that Chinese's the most popular among Asia? well they're wrong. Japan's definitely part of Asia. |

haha i have never heard THAT before. i thought the stereotype was everyone is either chinese or japanese. some people are just still stuck in the dark ages. |

Japan is definitely part of asia, you should know that. And your friend is just being an ignorant maybe you give her a lecture about your country. |

I lived in Japan for three years. You are beautifully Japanese, which is,in fact, part of Asia. |

Well, Japan is part of Asia, even if it's not connected directly by land. Here, just show her how many people agree that Japan is, in fact, a part of Asia. She can't still think it's not if she sees that 19 out of 20 people say otherwise. |

If Japan is not a part of Asia, what is it?? Maybe she is a proud Chinese, but why do you so worry and upset about her? There are more than China in Asia, and people in the world know that, you know? Sha was just kidding, perhaps. She must be! Otherwise, she needs help... |

No ancestors you can get ahold of back in Japan. You don't know any other Japanese people? History teachers?
My opinion your Asian....you should have asked her or go ask that person that said you weren't then what are you then.
I've never heard anything different and I'm about as American as they come. Sometimes people are so ignorant and tell people something they know nothing about.
Hope you set her straight when you find out for sure! |

But one thing you should remember. Most Japanese thinks Japan is Japan. No more that that and no less than that.
Do you think Japan and Japanese blend into the Asian society very much?
Probably you will find Japan doesn't.
Japanese proud that they are Japanese and living in Japan very much. Not in Asia (Of couse they are Asians).
This is another answer to your question. |
|

shazam
 |
both of you should grow up, read some more and then have an adult conversation
you will find that part of the problem was that Japan essentially closed itself off from the rest of the world for most of the past thousand plus years and then when it opened up again it was very aggressive against other Asian countries, first militarily (often in a very nasty way) and then business-wise. |
