I believe ketchup/ castup originated in Malasia as well. It originally didn't contain tomatoes, but could in fact be a fish or walnut based sauce.

Quote:
According to Random House, the term "ketchup", "catsup"
and "catchup" means the same thing. And the term and the sauce seems to be of Malay origin and the Malay term itself might actually been derived from the Chinese word. The term has already appeared in writing from the late 17th century although today the term "ketchup" is the most accepted spelling.

From other sources on the web, some writers think that the smooth tomato sauce originated from a spicy pickled-fish condiment popular in 17th-century China known as ke-tsiap or kecap and was introduced to other parts of the world by British seamen. It wasn't until the late 1700s that tomatoes was added to the blend.
End of quote:

NB: Spelling as found on the website: That should have read "...tomatoes were added..."

Yee Sang - what we eat during Chinese New Year reunion dinner. It is found entirely in Malaysia and in some Singapore restaurants - never in Hong Kong, not in China also.

Well, the name 'Bak Kut Teh' is probably localized but this style of cooking goes in many different names around the region and tastes differently... In Thailand and Cambodia, they are almost similar but lacking in certain spices that makes it exactly the same kind found in Malaysia...

What about 'Popiah' and Laksa Penang? Oh yeah... Fried bananas with kicap :-)

Satay is said to be of Javanese origin... but it can be widely found in variety throughout this region.

You can get pork satay in Thailand, Cambodia and Laos... its good for some reporters in here with sore thumbs.

the local cuisine, would that count as 'our creation'? Hinava, pinasakan, uluon (pansoh in Sarawak), nonsom, lihing, tapai... the list is endless! Unfortunately virtually nothing of the indigenous creations can be found in mainstream restaurants!

Then there is Tuaran Mee, Beaufort Mee etc...

I believed Yee Sang (fruit/veg salad with raw fish), the Chinese New Year's must have is created by Malaysian. It is uniquely a Malaysian dish.

Initially, I thought it was created by Hong Kongers but then, was told it was not. I think that's very creative of the Malaysian who created this refreshing and lovely salad. It's my favorite during the Chinese New Year and I love to eat it.

Mee Bandung !
Know what ?

When I went for holiday to Bandung, Indonesia, they said they have no idea idea what is Mee Bandung, much less to claim that the mee originated from Indonesia. I ended up giving them the steps needed to make the mee! LoL
