Can the Filipino People live without rice?

Furthermore can people live without rice?
Why and why not?
Is there a possible substitute?
What about in foreign countries where there is no rice?

Yes, for a couple of days maybe...after that, they make experience some withdrawal syndromes....lol. Oh there's rice in most foreign countries...it may not, however, be the milagrosa (brand) that we're so partial to.

Yes we can live with out rice when the time comes when there is no rice to consume almost every day 3 times a day. But while it's there we are going to eat it. Heck we even eat noodles with rice! Soup with rice! Almost anything with rice! And if there's no rice in the house, ask some from the neighbor! I eat ripe mangoes with rice (and fried fish). Some poor people eat rice with soy sauce only and some eat rice with salt. It's almost impossible to imagine what everyday is going to be like with out rice. It's almost like going through withdrawal pains when there's no rice. Seriously!

Oh and about a substitute: Some people in some areas eat ground corn as a version of their rice. Others mix corn with rice. But the rice eating population outnumber them like.... 9.98 to .02 in my humble opinion.

Filipinos can easily adapt to any given situation. There was a time when there was rice shortage in the country. We ate our daily fare then with ground corn. Corn meal (like oatmeal) and nutri-bun (like pandesal) were also rationed out during those times. (Pre-Martial Law babies, do you remember that period?)

Yes, we can live without rice, but only for a certain period of time. If rice isn't available, we can substitute it with bread, corn, pasta, roti, baklava or pita bread.

listen up i speak for all.. filipinos CAN live without rice.. because if other foreign countries can then we can too..
and plus you anyone can subtitute rice what kind of question is that

now here is why filipinos love rice.. because most of the filipino dishes need rice or else you won't really enjoy that dish. . like how the heck will you enjoy kare kare without rice?

do you understand? i hope this helped

PC
No way. The Filipino is used to rice that there is no way that they could live without it. My wife, a Filipina, could eat half a horse but would not be full unless she had a bowl of rice. The son is the same.
Most Western countries have their own "rice" i.e. wheat, yams, potatoes etc.

Mutya P
Oh, maybe, it's about time to prepare ourselves to eat without rice because as you can see, "lots of high rise buildings sprouted like mushrooms" (is this the right phrase?). And the particular lands were former ricefields and I was thinking that even the rice grannary of the Philippines will soon become the High Rise portion, too.
Well, as substitutes, there are lots of corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes or bread. But still RICE is the best !

Yup. Filipinos can live without rice. Potatoes, bread, wheat, corn can act as substitutes.

Yes. Because there are substitutes like bread and corn. One thing with the Filipino people, they are flexible (or adaptable) and can live and survive in foreign countries where there is no rice. Sorry but I have no answer to "Why not".

siopaO
no rice= suicide

No, Filipino can't live without rice because rice is the staple food of Philippines.

If you got wheat or corn how you gonna eat it? With fish? With bagoong? Weird combination.

Black Hat
I think yes, we can live without rice as soon as long as there's a substitute for it.

Possible substitute are Wheat and Corn. It means that we need to convert those rice field into wheat fields or corn fields.

Yes, we can. But it'll take time to get used to it.There's a lot of substitute for rice - potatoes, blackeye peas, yams, corn - basically carbohydrates/starch. And there's enough carbohydrates in the other foods we eat. But as " purple tactics" said, how do you eat kare kare without rice? I must add, what's adobo without rice. We can adjust if we don't have it. I am doing it now... I try to eat only meat and vegetables in the sinigang and nilaga.

why all the answers have "thumbs-down"? Don't they respect one's opinion about eating the rice or not?

filipino can live without rice if they try each day not to eat rice. There's a substitute for rice. . It depends on the person and eatng rice has been the tradition meal of the Filpinos.

I can't imagine life without rice.

When I went to Kuala Lumpur, I had gone on three meals without rice and my head ached as my stomach craved for the staple. I went down from the Park Royal Hotel where I was billeted and looked for rice in the mall across the street. McDonald served some chicken with blue rice (blue rice?!). It did not agree with my stomach until I bumped into a Chinese restaurant that offered some fried rice. Ah! The kind of cooking closer to home. It was my real first meal on the my second day in Kuala Lumpur.

And when my grandfather when to the United States, the Cebuano that he was brought a sack of rice with him. But no sooner than he landed there when he found his rice supply diminishing fast. His son's friends helped him eat his rice and were frequent visitors in the house!

So definitely, I won't be able to live without rice. And if I were to live in another part of the world, I am sure to get my rice supply at a Filipino store.

The ethnics on the island where I live here in the Philippines substitute their rice with kamoteng kahoy or cassava.

Even if rice is the staple food of Filipinos, they certainly can live without it. There are rice substitutes: bread and potato.

I am a Filipino but I don't eat rice that much....but I don't think that I can live without a rice in one straight year....Rice is the staple food we grew into so it is like in our system.
Substitute for rice? Corn, bread, oats or wheat.
Foreign countries with no rice? I think there is one existing...they import rice if they have no rice plantation I think.

Hunny
Sure we can. Filipinos can adjust quite easily

Purple Tactics
No way!!! No rice would mean the end of Filipino culture as we know it.

Just imagine what would happen to the booming tapsilog industry.

of course we can..but i still feel hungry even if i ate a pound of beef and there's no rice with it..

vibal
i don't think i can live without it. but other people maybe, like the the boholanos who lived with only ube during the war, some muslims take cassava, and most of the visayan populace prefer to eat corngrits.

Filipino people could live without rice, but people tend to
eat what their accustomed to eating throughout their life.

Filipinos eat rice because it's their main source of food
in the Philippines. Every country eats certain foods because
their are abundant sources of that product in their local area.

My wife eats RICE so it comes OUT OF HER EARS!!! BUT! here is another,EATS al kind of vegetables, more readyly than RICE! OH NEARLY FORGOT!!!! into potatoes too in ANY form!!! ANd on the subject of rice!!!! WHAT ABOUT FISH!!!! the only creature that eats more fish than a Philippino is a CAT!!!! they can eat fish 24/7 30 days a month at least 3 times a day!!!

livinhapi
OF COURSE THEY CAN JUST LIKE WHEN ITALIANS GO TO PLACES WHERE THERE IS NO PASTA THEY CAN ADJUST TO WHAT IS AVAILABLE. HUMANS ARE FLEXIBLES BEINGS AND THEY ADJUST TO THEIR ENVIRONMENTS.

windblown
Very hard to imagine but I think the Filipinos will live without rice. It would be hard to adjust though because we are used eating it. Its part of our culture.
Substitute: corn, wheat or root crops.
Foreign countries with no rice? Obviously, they are still breathing right now. They can live with or without rice. This applies to all countries.

not me, I eat rice everyday cause it's delicious

yes, without a choice, any starving person would eat anything thats available anyway. but given a choice im sure filipinos would still continue to eat rice. just like bread its used to balance the taste of other foods (viand/main course). for filipinos, rice is part of culture. it symbolizes prosperity, abundance, richness. thats why its also used in their different ceremonies.

You might as well wipe us out! :) Filipino meals are meant to be eaten with rice. Like the others, I can't imagine eating adobo or kaldereta without rice.

I don't know what breakfast would be without rice: tuyo and mashed potatoes? tocino and toast? ☺

In time maybe we can adjust. I can live without rice for a couple of weeks. But not forever....

Mitchiko
I can for 2 weeks but longer than that I get cranky.
I need to find rice entrees in the menu fast or find a resto that would probably serve rice.

Last option is to cook for myself and eat it with GUSTO! :)

Johny
Generally speaking that would be a NO. Because most of the Filipino cuisine revolves around rice dishes and rice is the cheapest and abundant food sources in the Philippines.

ausebayer
I think they could overtime but they eat it everytime! 95% of my dinner is with Rice and hardly ever a time without Rice unless you get KFC or something like that.

In the philippines, its very rare to find people each certain meals without rice although you could have soup meals although you wouldn't have that all the time
