The Philippines were given their independence on July 4, 1946. At that time they did not want to be a part of the U.S. and most would not want to be anything but independent as they are now.

i think it would be a nice idea. Because when the US was here b4. They do a lot of good things. Like they educate our elders. Maybe if its happen again. It would be easy for us to got a job. And maybe our life would not be as hard as we have at this time.

The operative word in the question is "Can", not "Should".

The United States is the most powerful country in the planet. If it wants to re-annex the Republic of the Philippines by force, of course it can. And wouldn't it just break the heart of the lady who remarked "You just want to be US citizens!"??

But to do so would be politically suicidal. If it does, come the next Presidential election and a Filipino would be the next US President. After all, we're masters of the election game.

The policy of the USA is, that only territories might become a U.S. state, which are dominantly inhabit by U.S. citizens.

This was so by the continental expansion and also by Hawaii, which became a state only 1959 after enough U.S. citizen lived there.

They voted against Cuba (1898) and they are still against Puerto Rico becoming a state of USA.

But there might have been a chance, Philippines became a territory like Guam. But both US- and Philippine politician didn't like by the majority. Now the train left already. The Philippine even closed the military bases of USA.

In theory it is possible to apply for it. But the Gov. dont do it. And even then, the US Gov. nowadays dont like either. Imagine the problems of the Philippines (poorness and corruption and so on). Look at the problems Germany still has with its eastern, former communist, poor part. No. The US would be stupid to do it.

The Philippines itself won't become a state, but with all the lovely Filipina brides that cross the Pacific Ocean to marry us Americans and make beautiful Filipino-American families, our joined families enjoy the best of both worlds! You are already a big part of the extended American family, and because you are a beautiful people to begin with, will always be so!

it would be nice but the governments of both nations wouldn't want it it would better both nations in so many ways but politician's wouldn't let this happen it would be to good politicians in both nations don't worry about people they only worry about they're jobs and lieing to the public to get elected.mexico would make a good edition to but that will not happen most of them are here already.

it may be nice, but I I think Filipinos are strong enough to go past our own problems.. may take some time, but i still have faith that we can do something about it.. Much as I love the my life here in the U.S., I would still choose the Philippines if I have to choose where I would prefer to live all my life.

well... it's still better to be 'The Philippines', itself...

rather than to be, 'the Philippines, USA'...

There was a vote back in the early 70's to join the US but it failed. Not sure if the vote was legitimate or what. But Puerto Rico had a similar vote a few years back and also turned down the option. To make a point, you do not have to be a terriotory to become a state. Texas for example was a republic and not a territory before becoming a state. Once the vote was approved Texas beame a territory temporarily while waiting for US Congressional ratification as a state. Most of the Filipino's I asked are against state hood because of taxes. But since most Filipino's make less than $25,000 or less than 1 million pesos a year I think it's unlikely taxes would hurt the PI.

Further, a number of laws in the PI would probably not meet US Constitutional guidlines, so the Philippines would have to submit to US will in accordance with following the courts. The main thing is that the Philippine population votes to seek entry, not the population of the US. While congress must ratify and accept this request, they have never turned one down, with exception to a request from the state of Franklin (there are special reasons there). The PI would still have power over state law regarding licensure and a number of other issues.

After WWII the PI had an another opportunity to seek state hood but at that time declined. My Grandfather was a guerilla fighter, and the reason he told me that many monuments and much thanks only went to Guerilla fighters later was because the Govt was corrupt. The U.S. paid Spain 20 million back in 1903 when they invaded, but paid the PI about 160 million (http://www.digital.library.unit.edu) in rebuilding efforts. Much of that went to "agricultural" efforts. So accoding to gpa many of the guerillas started fighting corrupt govt and this simply led to problems for true Patriotic Filipino's like him and others. Years later Pres Marcos actually lied about guerilla service as it became more socially acceptable by the govt.

Now, despite this state hood for the Philippines could be a major benefit. Firstly, the US National Highway Transoportation System would likely build a large transporation network. The current National Highway and the road going to Baguio were actually built using US oversight and funds but are very outdated some 60 years later. Right now Taiwan can import Rice cheaper than a farmer can get it to Manila from Ilocos Norte. So good highways would be a good thing.

Further, the US Electoral voting College, the way we elect Presidents, and the way we staff congress is done by population. The number of congressmen a state has is determined by dividing it's population into the total population of the nation using the US Census. There are 435 voting representatives, and the territories get non voting representatives. If the population is 10 million or 300 million the same 435 are allowed. So if the Philippines was a state it would have about 91 million (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook), the Philippines would have the largest population of any state in the US. Currently CA wins with almost 40 million, and this give them 55 congressional reps, with NY trailing with 20 million and 31 reps. If we divided up the US using a population of 392 million, the PI would have more than 90 representatives (as a state cannot have less than 2), and CA would have about 40 reps (http://www.vote-smart.org/election_president_electoral_college.php) . This would give the Philippines the most congressional power of any state in the Union. Congressional membership are responsible for creating a budget, and especially at first many members will work hard to befreiend their new peers and vote for high funding public works projects in the PI. I would expect that the PI would see more than 1/5 of public dollars going intot the PI since more than 1/5 of the US popuation whould be living in the Philippines.
