You are correct when you say that Buddhists should not eat beef, however, some Christians should eat fish on a Friday but choose to eat meat instead. The reason that Buddhists should not eat beef is because it, the cow, is, or was, an animal that worked in the rice fields. You don't eat your tools. I am afraid that this is the real world and if a Buddhist has a liking for beef, which many have, they will eat it. There is no shortage of beefburgers and they are not just consumed by the tourists. I was equally surprised as you when I holidayed in Morocco and found many Muslims in the bars drinking beer. As one Muslim put it to me when I asked about this. It doesn't matter whether you drink beer, or I suppose in this case, eat beef. What matters is the way you live your life and treat other people. |

Who told you that Buddhist can't eat beef? People in Thailand DO eat beef - all the time. There are McDonalds in Thailand and they serve beef burgers.
It is people in INDIA that do not eat beef because cow is sacred to Hindus. |

You are confusing Hinduism with Buddhism. Buddhist do eat beef if they are not vegetarian.
So, you get burgers as you would from any McDonald outlet around the world, with supply originating from the US. |

From what i know is my friends who are strict buddhists do not eat beef. On the other hand i also have friends who eat them. I also have Indian friends who eat beef. So, i believe at the end of the day it all comes down to how a person was brought up, the values that were instilled at home from young.
Me, i love fish and i avoid meats as much as possible. |

Yes. Not everyone there is buddhist. I've been to the mcdonalds there, it's ten times nicer and cleaner than the ones in America. |

Yes you can buy Beef (Neu-ah) al over thailand but my friends eat more fish (bplah) pork (Moo) Chicken (Gai) and egg (Kai). Eat rice or just eat (gin kaow).
Lots of places serve beef. But I must say my friends in Thailand refrain from eating beef but they do drink milk. I agree that it probably has to do with the cow or puffalo being the tractor. If you eat the tool you use to make rice next year you don'tget much rice.
And it always freeks me out that people come on here and say I'm thai and we don't do that when my experience directly contradicts what they are saying. Maybe they should start going to the Wat and spend more time out in the country instead of the Mall. |

Sir, you're dead wrong. Buddhists can eat anything. Monks allowed to eat everything. The principle of Buddhism when it comes to eating is that Monks must eat without choosing. Some monks mix up any foods that offered to them in a pot and eat them all together. That's the essence of Buddhism, eating only to survive, and avoiding the temptations of the taste of foods.
There are so many McDonald and Burger King in Thailand, although you may want to try Thai food, or even burgers from other restaurant that taste much nicer than those fast food chains. |

The issue of meat consumption (regardless of being Hindu or Buddhists) is a personal idea and should not be associated with any specific religion. This almost similar prohibition can be found in almost every religion with different sets of ideas and intention.
For those who calls themselves 'Buddhists' and claim that Buddhists do not eat beef, etc. Where exactly in the Tipitaka which specifically mentions that the Lord Buddha himself had prohibited the consumption of beef?
As a matter of fact, he had also REJECTED the idea that Buddhist monks should be strict vegetarians or live their lives solely on ascetic practices when suggested by his cousin/student Venerable Devadatta during the dispute where Venerable Devadatta tried to create a schism within the Bikkhu Sangha out of jealousy and greed to mislead the community of monks. Rather, he had suggested these practices to be an individual observance and there is never such a prohibition/admonishment by the Buddha.
This is also specifically mentioned in the Jivaka Sutta on what constitutes a 'prohibited meat' which a Bikkhu/devotee should not consume(Suttanta-Pitaka; Majjhima Nikaya: Majjhima Pannsa, Gahapati-Vagga):
'Jivaka, those who say "Animals are slaughtered on purpose for the recluse Gotama, and the recluse Gotama knowingly eats the meat killed on purpose for him" do not say according to what I have declared, and they falsely accuse me. Jivaka, I have declared that one should not make use of meat if it is seen, heard or suspected to have been killed on purpose for a monk. I allow the monks meat that is quite pure in three respects: if it is not seen, heard or suspected to have been killed on purpose for a monk.'
The same goes to those who claim that 'Hindus' who do not eat beef. There are hundreds of different schools in Hinduism itself and it is generally a common practice to avoid beef in most cases but this is not what it was like in the earlier days.
As a matter of fact, the Vedas during the early vedic times (earliest form of religious texts) did not prohibit meat eating or the killing of animals. Instead, large scale sacrifice became the norm at that time, particularly the cruel ritual of the asvamedha (which resulted in rejection of the Vedas by some later schools, which includes Buddhism and Jainism). There is also no specific mentions in forbidding the consumption of beef. Neither were cows considered 'sacred' in those times as a devotee will only respect cows as a matriarchal figure for her gentle qualities and providing nurturing milk and its products for a largely vegetarian diet.
When the Upanishads were introduced, the principle of non-injury (ahimsa) was assimilated into the Indian religious life. But even here sacrifice to the gods was still permitted, though not on the scale that it had assumed in later Vedic times. The early Upanishads, like the Chandogya, permit the consumption of meat, especially if part of it is offered to god. The Ashvalayana Grhya Sutras prescribe the sacrifice of a cow for consumption and had specifically recommended guidelines in selecting cows for such rituals and purposes for consumption.
It was only in post-Buddhist/Jain times that certain Hindu sects adopted vegetarianism as a general rule. But the rule was not universal and some Hindu sects, like those following the cult of Tara, engaged in ritual killing and consumption of meat. Most Kali devotees today also consume beef and will only abstain if they chooses to. Hindus in general however, would prefer to either became vegetarians, or at least avoided some kinds of meat.
Those who believe that Vedic people ate cows propose that the scriptural injunctions against eating it started with Krishna, who tended cows, or alternatively with the rise of Jainism. Despite the differences of opinion regarding the origins of the cow's elevated status, reverence for cows can be found throughout the religion's major texts. |

Well considering that the mass marketers cater to the masses and yet manage to have something for everyone you have answered your own question. Burger King has a veggie burger here in the states that must be popular as they keep it on the menu. |

YES!
But McDonald's & other burger joints are more famous for their pork burgers. It's nice, you should try it ;)
Thai. are also famous for their Beef Noodles!
Buddhist can eat beef. Even the monks in Nepal are not all vegetarians. I've a friend's cousin's who's a monk there.
It's just up to one to respect the cows or not & up to you to eat it and where. E.g. it's not very respectful for you to be eating a beef burger nearby Buddhist/Hindu temples or holy places.
Besides Buddhist, most Hindu don't eat beef too. |
