Can you forgive and forget?

I got a Church brother told me that as a Christian we should forgive and forget. I told him that what he said is naive. We should learn to forgive but forget is impossible. Unless the Church give me the device used by MIB which can erase one's memory.

If we had forget the one who had hurt us so badly, then it is easy to "forgive". I would not call it forgive, since you had forget everthing.

There's this quote that is a personal favorite of mine and it goes like this:

"He who receives kindness should never forget it;
but he who performs it should never remember it"

I strongly believe in upholding this view and strive my very best to reflect upon myself and the things that I do...

So, if a person has a forgiving heart and mind, there should never be anything to 'remember' or 'forget' because forgiveness nullifies any acts of wrongdoings of another person and that act should not be taken to heart.

Jesus said "if you do not forgive your brother then Father God will not forgive you of your sins." Matthew 6:14 &15 and Mark 11:24-25 That right there would make me want to certainly forgive and sort of try to understand my fellow man, possibly try to forget.

Forgiveness is an attribute which has received due attention in Islam and has been extensively discussed in the Holy Qur'an and Hadith. But, nowadays people are lacking in attention, and it seems very hard to practice forgiveness in daily life. That is the reason why we hear news of wars everywhere, people are fighting and killing each other. Every one is blaming other parties and neglecting the virtue of forgiveness. Thus, it is important for us to re-inculcate the value of forgiveness in our lives. Think and ponder first, do we really know what is forgiveness?. What is the importance of forgiveness?. How to inculcate the value of forgiveness in out lives?

a) Allah's forgiveness:

Allah Ta'ala is The Most Forgiving. He will forgive everyone who seek for forgiveness.

b) Human forgiveness:

We cannot expect for Allah's forgiveness unless we also forgive those who do wrong to us. Forgiving each other, even forgiving one's enemies is one of the most important Islamic teaching. Allah says in the Quran: "those who avoid major sins and acts of indecencies and when they are angry they forgive" (al-Shura 42:37)

Wow... that's a good question.
I agree that it's really naive for someone to think that forgiveness & getting over it go hand in hand *rolls eyes*
However, as hard as it may be to forget life is short enough why bear a grudge? Easier said than done but I do believe that in time; heal all wounds.

Sarah
i agree with Peterng....but as humans its true its hard to forget, but if you feel its hard to forget that means you didnt really forgive that person, you are still holding the grudge....how you u feel if Jesus forgave you for your sins but he didnt forget wat u did....but as a loving Lord he forgave and forgot about your sins....

Forgive and forget, you really need a very BIG heart to do that. I am not a saint. Trying to forgive is already a big step forward, let alone forget. However, time is always the best medicine to heal. As time goes along, you will find forgiving an easy task.

Yes, I doubt we could all forget anything that is so unpleasant. The memory can be suppressed deep down and stored away, but it will never go away. However, it is always a good to have a forgiving heart and leave the past behind.

In time, I may learn to forgive someone who has hurt me but depends on what the wrong is, I may chose not to forget. And you know what? Have we actually thought why humans are blessed with the power of memory? There is a purpose. Take me for example. I had a hard childhood courtesy from my father. Now that I have grown up and with much maturity and experience in life, I have of course forgiven him. As what close friends said, he is still my father. However, I may and will never forget what he said to me or how he had treated me during my childhood. I want to remember so that I will not take the same route that he has taken. In short, I DO NOT WISH TO BE LIKE HIM. Therefore, by not forgetting, it serves as a reminder to me to be a better person than the person who has hurt me, somehow or someway.

Girl In Green
To forgive is extraordinary,

To forget is human nature.
