In the Philippines, most don't need to imagine this terrible fate--it is their daily reality. |

I lived 50 plus years without ever eating a bite of rice until I came to the Philippines. It is unsual that someone raised in South Texas where rice was raised did not eat rice, but for whatever reason my family did not. I now eat way too much rice, but would not panic if it was not available to me. |

Sure, especially if you're living in Europe.
Pasta, bread, potato are the food staples back there. <*-*> |

There are other choices of carbohydrates besides rice and they are all as good, if not better options. |

i believe so - it is one way to cut down one's weight if you intend to lose weight. there is another substitute - have bread or sometimes pasta. now i eat rice once a day and the other meal only the veggies and some meat with more fruits. |

Yes, good for one's health if we are forced to seek a healthier alternative. Corn, cassava, camote, well, not to forget, the pastas, the breads. So many alternatives. The problem would come in the 'getting used to'. |

Yup! Many races from different countries do that. |

personally i,m a meat and potato eater ,
so i don,t know if it qualifies me for an honest answer ,-
but i do know that there are more people depending on there daily rice quota than that of the potato eaters .--
and the absent of there daily rice ration would create mass havoc and starvation -.
so to answer your question --
no i could not imagine the world without its rice , |

who could? rice feeds the world. |

I can not eat rice once in a while but still, life isn't complete without rice. Bread or mashed potato won't work for me. Rice is more filling for me. |

No way! I eat rice everyday with every type of food! The only things i don't eat rice with are spaghetti, pizza, hamburgers... stuff like that. But otherwise, rice is my #1 food source! Haha. Plus if you add rice to whatever ulam you have, you won't eat as much ulam. because you have rice to fill you up. Which means more ulam to go all around! Yay! |

i asked the same question one year ago, i have had some health issues before and needed to go through a strict diet program, I thought i'm gonna die without eating rice, before i started the program, i eat 4 times a day with rice as a part of my merienda(snacks to others), i have a minimum of 2 cups of rice for each meal, for Filipino families, it is but normal to have rice in each of our meal, a meal without rice will actually make our day incomplete, and some would even feel weak. when i started to eliminate rice as a part of my meal, it was really, really HARD for me, i was crying and hiding inside my room each and every meal so i wont be tempted to eat rice especially when our viand is sinigang(which is my favorite). It will really be hard at first, but you'll get use to it, I got used to it...it's just a matter of self-discipline, I eat whole wheat bread as a substitute for rice, and eat lots of veggies and fruits, and now after 1 year, i am proud to say that i've lost 85 pounds and is now enjoying a healthy lifestyle without the rice. |

We can have potato, corn, pasta or vegetable salad. What matters to me is that we have meat and fish. But anyway without rice still a huge disaster to me. |
