Can you read/write jawi?

Jawi is the original writing language of Bahasa Malaysia. After the 'modernization era' it is replaced with roman alpahbets. Jawi alphabets are like arabian language alphabets, except they have added the alphabet Ja, Fa, Va and Nga to match the spoken BM.

Back in those days, not only Malay can master Jawi, but Chinese and Indians too. My English Teacher Mr Padbanadhan can read better Jawi then me back in school days.

So, if I give you Utusan Jawi, can you read the articles in it?

Yes, I can read Jawi although no longer as smooth as 10 years ago. Jawi reading materials are very hard to find now.

Jawi is not the first writing or reading language of Bahasa Malaysia. Before jawi, there are some kind of writing or known as Bahasa Kuno. Jawi appeared only when Malay started to take Islam as their religion. Jawi is actually from S. Arab.

I know how to write "Allah" in Jawi only. I was studying with a whole class of Malay students, I learned some Jawi before. My classmates thought me how to pronounce this "alif-nun-jim-ya-nga".
