China? Would you go?!? |
hey i have a problem...7 months ago i booked flights to chengdu, china. we are due to flyo the 30th til the 14th june for a holiday, my friend lives there and we are visiting her.
however, the earthquake has happened, right near where we are going. the FCO website says shouldnt travel to the region unless essential which it isnt of couse.but could this change in 2 weeks? the airline have given us the option of postponing for a month- will that make a difference?!
if we decide to cancel we basically get £300 back out of the £1080 we spent on the flight. we might be able to claim the rest back through insurance, but our claim might not go through in light of whats happened.
i just dont know what to do and am trying to gather as much info and opinion as possible. obviously i know if we go my friend its not going to be all lovely and hunky dory, and im actually willing to put aside a couple of day of my trip to help with aid if i am able. Additional Details just wanted to add....its a tossup between going and risking it being awful opossibly losing £700! |

Chengdu is also affected by the quake even the demage in the city itself is not too serious or deadly. Safety should be OK for Chengdu from the earthquake, but it is certainly not a good time for sightseeing and tourist right now. Chengdu is the closest major city for the earthquake. Lots of refugees and homeless were moved into Chengdu. The Chengdu hospital may be all filled up with injured people. The major sightseeing places already ChengDu as Wolong panda home and Jiuzhai are heavily demanged by the quake. I don't think there is any "sightseeing" purposes for going there now.
If you just want to see your friend in Chengdu, it is possiblly OK. You should consider to connect flight to another cities for visiting at this time. (E.g. If your plane ticket connects your from Beijing to Chengdu, it is better to stay in Beijing instead of going to Chengdu, or buying a ticket from Chengdu to a different cities to visit.) |

I would go! Its not very likely that the quake will hit again and kill you so go for it.Go and help out the people in need. |

Well, you are visiting your friend right? So that means your friend lives near the quake area. Ask your friend if she is affacted by the quake. If everything is ok, then go for it. |

Are you going to Jiuzhai? If you are, then I suggest you not go. Cheungdu was not severely inflenced by the earthquake, if you wanna travel around that city, you can still go. |

i would suggest postponing it until later when its safe. better safe than sorry. don't let your money go to waste !!! |

I'll go if I were you. Just to help the survivors in whatever way I can. I believe this will be the most fulfilling , meaningful, and fruitful experience of your life. Go! |

I personally would put it off a month. There are clauses in insurance (force major or something like that? Sorry forget exactly) which basically means you aren't covered by anything that is 'an act of god' - so not a man made problem. A month should be long enough to be sure. |

It may be simpler than you imagine. ASk insurance people if you are covered if you go there against foreign office advice. If not then its simple. If yes then its also simple. |

Try and find out some more local information. The holiday company should be able to tell you what's going on. In the places directly affected by the earthquake, resources are very strained and tourists are only going to make matters worse. On the other hand, 50 miles away, they'd benefit from your business. |

1) Discuss with your friend
2) monitor http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Maps/10/105_35_eqs.php
- the tremors are dying down, none now for 24 hours. |

You should postpone it for a month since they probably still be mourning over the people that died and so let them settle down a little |

wow. this is a real opportunity to be part of history. I say go, go help those people, i know your only one person, but that makes all the difference. Just be really careful and make sure you take all the shots necessary to be safe in China. Enjoy the expericence and may god bless you, you have a heart of gold. The last thing on most people's minds is helping. |

if I were you I would see if you could change the location of your trip, Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian somewhere away from the earthquake areas, I am hearing that there is a fear for disease and polluted water and food supplies (I have a friend living in Sichuan and they are all very afraid at the moment), I just read on Yahoo wild dogs are eating the corpses and the soldiers are now having to hunt them down before the dogs go after people and other animals
June will be hotter weather, there are 5 million people who are homeless and that is not going to change by June, the cities were totally destroyed
try to change the location of your trip |

you should ask your friend if it bothered her if you still came, and if it's safe. i'd would try to go if i were you. i'd pack lots of medicine, but i'm sure you thought of that already... good luck |

people r actually getting out fr Chengdu now. n those can't be leaving. they prefer to sleep in the park but not their own houses. so y r u going? losing a bit $ or losing ur life? i m currently in HK. heard so so so many news abt the earthquake day & nite. the earth's crust is stil moving down there. think deeply b4 u really want to go. good luck! |

This really isn't a time to travel to that region. As far as helping, I don't think the people would appreciate some young white girl trying to help, when actually unless you are a doctor or a nurse, you are just bothering people.
I am in no way being rude, just realistic about the situation there. It is a very serious disaster and while I understand that you want to help, what could you really do? I would go also to help, but I would only be in the way and have to have Chinese people watch me to keep me out of trouble. And I live in China. |
