Throughout the entire Philippines, it's Chinese New Year.
Most Chinese, as well as Filipinos (particularly in Manila), wear red this day and take part in Dragon Dances and Fireworks displays. They also take part in eating Chinese delicacies although Filipinos have not taken to the Chinese-only custom of giving "ang paos" or red packets of money.
Chinese New Year 2009 is on January 26, 2009 (Monday), and is a school holiday in Chinese schools throughout the Philippines.
CNY in the Philippines is unique, primarily because Chinese Christians celebrate "Chinese Christmas" the day before Chinese New Year proper. On this day, Chinese Filipino schools are placed on half-day and also celebrate their version of "Noche Buena-Media Noche" rolled into one.
*Chinese New Year is also the "Chinese birthday" of Chinese Filipinos (and all Chinese in the world). The Chinese age of a person is his Western / typical age + one year (because the Chinese believe that the counting of age begins in conception). They turn a year older in their Chinese age on this date. |

Soon we will be having the annual Sinulog Festival celebrated every third Sunday of January. It is one big feast in Cebu where throngs of people gather to celebrate and witness the colorful festivities that honor the child Jesus known as the Santo Niño (Holy Child), the city's patron. It is a dance ritual that commemorates the Cebuano people's pagan origin, and their acceptance of Christianity.
Well, I did enjoy the recent holidays but not that much as compared to the years when Christmas and New Year often brought excitement. |
