As far as China is concerned, it would NOT go to war with Japan. Japan and China are quite friendly economically. Yes, resentment does remain in China and Korea in regards to Japan's WWII agression, but it's not as strong or as clear-cut as people claim. Also, even those who fervently hate Japan would be unlikely to advocate war. I think they would prefer rising economically above Japan.

The most probable would be North Korea however, it's not very probable. North Korea is in a cozy position right now, because nobody will touch it. If it were to attack Japan, it would lose its shield and the world would react. That's the last thing North Korea wants.

But if you're writing a fictitious story, I suppose it depends on how historically plausible you want it to be. If you want to get highly political, you could attempt to create a scenario in which North Korea is backed into a corner and decides to launch missiles at Japan...

The problem with a modern Japanese war scenario is that Japan doesn't really have any hostile enemy states (North Korea I guess is potentially hostile, but as I said above, not so threatening at the moment). Also, if you plan on Japan fighting a war independently, that's not plausible. A Japanese war would be more of an American war, since the Japanese defense depends heavily on America. A prolonged war in which Japan is able to fight independently would be an entirely fictitious story (unless you are setting your story FAR in the future).

But once again, that depends on how realistic you are attempting to make your story. If it's just for fun, then use your imagination and make it fun!

Near future ? None.Japan is trying to get out of a bad recession. And China is more interested in making more money. If any country gets stupid,it would be North Korea.

Well, Japan's military is limited bcause of post WW2 negotiations, but lately there's been some tension between Japan and North Korea.

It's against Japan's constitution to take part in a war or armed conflict, they can to some extent defend themselves if the country is attacked, but that's it. I think you may have to find another country to write about.
As for other posts, forget China, there is too much trade going on between the two. If anyone attacks Japan it would be North Korea, but they would have the rest of the world against them in two minutes, and are so poor and under resourced (their people are starving) that any aggression on N Korea's part would be immediately crushed

i am japanese.

japan wouldn't go to war with any countries. war is against japanese national constitutions. but if North Korea attacked japan, united states would protect us since we don't have the army. well, it's an agreement.

so i can't deny, there's a possibility that North Korea would attack japan since we don't get along. japan doesn't get along with China and Korea because of our historical background but they wouldn't attack japan. never happens anyway.

Nowadays, only countries that are crazy enough to wage a war against another are authoritarian regimes--communist, militarist, theocratic, or otherwise--that give a rat's *** about human rights. (The only exception to this is the U.S., a liberal democracy and yet war-mongering--a rare combo.)

Authoritarian regimes are fewer nowadays, but unfortunately two of them are still alive and well in Japan's neighborhood. The predicament of Tibet, Uighur, etc. can happen to Japan and Korea, too.

Let's just hope that these criminal regimes will collapse soon and reborn as a human-rights-respecting democracy before going crazy.

The possibility still remains though it is very slim chance because Japan has no military and conscription militarization there.

Both Japanese self-defense army and Japan are just protected by US military.Japanese self-defense army only has 250 thousands member in total. Their equipments are very few, only for self-defense purpose.

Japan could be the battlefield but it won't fight back to the enemy. That is why they have been employing US military expensively.

Who will battle with US military in Japan?

It will be North Korea or Russia. China won't because they know it is useless and they don't want to fight with USA.

There's no country remotely likely to go to war with Japan in the near future.
But I guess the least unlikely might be Russia. Not because the Japan-Russian relationship is especially bad, but because no other country in the region has a military that could possibly mount a land invasion of Japan. Japan's military (self-defense force), especially its navy, is too powerful.
And there's a possibility of the Russian government collapsing completely in the future, which would make this kind of crazy action possible.
The cause would be a dispute over the Kuril Islands / Northern Territories off the northern coast of Japan. In this fantasy scenario, Russia might mount an invasion of Hokkaido, the large northern island. But they would never be able to get to Honshu, the main island.

If it's a fiction, surely you can use your imagination? But I'd suggest that if it's in the not too distant future it could be America. You know how some Japanese are getting seriously upset by crimes committed by US forces? Even more so since it became public knowledge that you don't even have to be American to be accepted into the US military, and it's a short cut to US citizenship. That came to light because some AWOL bloke murdered a taxi driver, but despite being AWOL from the US military he wasn't actually an American citizen. So you could easily have your war sparked by evil foreigners who infiltrate the US military to come to Japan and cause terror by attacking civilian areas. The Japanese would obviously get very shirty, but the US as usual would deny it all and so you could make war break out, with the Japanese using guerilla tactics to steal the US equipment already on Japanese soil. Crazy, but at least you'd have a good excuse for the participants using English.

Or maybe Australia would do, maybe over whaling or something. Perhaps the real reason for Australia's opposition to Japanese whaling is because they've got some top secret weapon being perfected under the ice, and then one day the Japanese whalers accidentally harpoon the weapon, killing the Australian PM who just happens to be inspecting it that day, and so a coup takes place with a nutter taking control of Australia, and he decides to get revenge on the destruction of the weapon by trying to exterminate the Japanese.

It can be a story of vengeance. Obama fails as president, but some other Black guy rises to the occasion and becomes FÃ¼hrer, separating Blacks from the non-Black races int he United States and creating an all-Black coalition of States. These states ally with a few African (and ironically, European) allies and wage war against Japan. Some other countries might back up Japan. This story becomes a pseudo-romantic tale since the FÃ¼hrer heroically leads his troops into battle against the japanese in order to seek vengeance against Noriko.

No country would be stupid enough to attack Japan as far as Japan-US Security Treaty is effective.
By the same token, Japan cannot stage a war against any countries as far as present Japanese constitution is effective and the presence of US Forces continue.

I know this is a boring answer, but this is true.

I relay think when people relies how many job's that lot have taken away from some country's there will be some kind of accounting
and by the way for your story ask people if they realise that japan refused to apologies for the atrocities they committed under there emperor and in his name to this day .kind of weird don't you think that at the end of the war and a long time after they just point blank refused
to do any thing to there war criminal's it was horrendous what they got away with what they did to american british and allied prisoner's of war
but what they did in china was like out of a horror movie one example was a section of solder's went into a village sprayed every living thing human with a nerve agent they took sample's from all those poor people they were all still alive at the time I had read about there special area they had up in the north of china on a tv programme
but it was all hushed up so yes china will be the first one in followed by the rest they are defiantly not liked to this day
