Urban Myth

Philippine society: Philippine society is a fusion of asian and western culture. Reflecting influences from spain and american colonial rule, as well as influences from chinese trade, migration and japanes occupation. This, combined to the native filipino culture has resulted in a unique blend that makes filipinos one of the most adaptive and resilient races in the world. Filipinos have their own unique and thriving brand of music cold OPM (Original Pinoy Music) and they produce tv soaps that reflect philippine contemporary way of life. It is shown in various countries all over the world including the US, australia, korea, malaysia and various european and african countries. The Philippines is also the only Christian country in asia (with the exception of the newly formed east timor).
Food: Filipino cuisine boasts of a variety of flavors reflecting the various cultures of its many islands. Unlike other countries in asia which combine a variety of spices to their dish, Philippine dishes generally prefer to concentrate on a few spices to highlight their flavor. Filipinos are also rice eaters and are the only people I know that eat rice for breakfast. Dishes like adobo, kare-kare, bicol express, laing, sinigang, binagoongan, mechado, caldereta, tapsilog, chicken inasal, sapin-sapin, halo-halo, pancit, goto and lumpia are some examples of philipine native food. They are pretty good. I love filipino food.
Filipino cuisine also features a lot of exotic food. Some of which have gained global notoriety because they are considered taboo in other places. Food such as Balut (fertilized duck egg), dinuguan (pig's blood stew) and chicken and pork isaw (intestines) have long been an attraction for the curious tourist and have even been featured in gross food challenge shows like fear factor and survivor.
Stores and Movie Theatres: Are you kidding? Philippines is the shopping mecca of asia. Being home to 3 of the top 10 biggest malls on the planet, with SM Mall of asia being the 3rd largest, shopping is a way of life in the Philippines. Theatres you bet! how about an olympic sized ice skating rinks? there are several of those too (this might be common elsewhere but not in a tropical region) along with some of the cheapest and most interesting flea markets in the region. |

Ive been to Phils, my wife is from phils, my company has an office in the phils. The provinces are totally different from the large cities. Religion and family values are top priority. Divorce is illegal. English is taught as a second laungage. The PHP (peso) is about 45/USD now. Its cheap to live there on USD budget. Rice, fish&fruits (locally grown/caught) are staples.Crime seems to be directly related to need rather then gang related. Food is becoming expensive, gasoline is about 62PHP/liter.There is now a 12% VAT (value added tax) on almost everything. |

The society is patriarchal and have high influences that are Indonesian, Malay, Chinese, Spanish and American in origin. In fact, Filipinos look like a mixture of all said races. So, there's a Filipino who is mestizo looking, chinky-eyed, etc. majority of Filipinos are Roman Catholics.
Food? Filipinos are carnivorous. We love to eat food that have extreme tastes. Our Adobo is salty and our Sinigang could be sour. But these two are favorites among foreigners. Food is influenced by the above races so rice is a staple diet (from Indo/Malay races), we have tomato-based dishes (Spanish), our version of Chinese dishes and all fatty American foods like fastfoods.
What stores? There's a mall in every 5 blocks in the Philippines. Malling is a hobby among FIlipinos and you can't see a mall not overcrowded. Malls are also huge. I think the Mall of Asia in the National Capital Region is the biggest in Asia, if not, one of the biggest. It will take you more than a day to visit all shops. Stores also sell everything from all sizes. There are also bargain shops, where clothes, etc. are as cheap as fare.
There are a minimum of 6 movie theaters in every mall. There are also those that have 12 theaters. From cheap movies to imax movies - name it, we have it. |

hmmm almost the same with the USA, its like a third-world USA, because we were colonised by the US, major religion here is not buddhism or any other asian religion, its catholic and protestant. most asian countries like football/soccer like hongkong, japan, thailand, indonesia, thailand, malaysia. we just love basketball. We got some cities w/c are as congested, modern and complex and disorderly as organised as new york city and we got country sides. Ironically, even though this is a third-world country, there are shopping malls everywhere! theres an economic crisis here right now but still you would see hordes of people at the malls, watching movies, eating in fastfood restaurants, finedining restos etc., they said we are one of the happiest people in the world, i do not know why, maybe we always want to have fun. We do not like to work,we just wanna have fun, drink, eat, visit beach resorts, have fun w/friends, chat with friends, eating, date with beautiful Filipinas. We got alot of food, LOts of delicious food, and we're not conscious about what we eat, we are not afraid of calories, cholesterol, etc... whatever's delicious and yummy, we're going to eat that! hehe... that's why we are also one of the most short-living people in the world(I guess), male filipinos usually die way ahead of their wives, hehehe.. that's how fun loving we are, we eat drink and feel merry all the time!Hmmm, im still proud of my country!despite the economic crisis, hehe |

Yes, they have movie theaters.
They have the same type of stores, but different brands.
They eat mainly rice, but they do have several types of dishes.
I feel that a lot of Filipinos that I've met are very welcoming and faith-based.
It's still pretty rural in some places, gorgeous beaches, there are slums, but there are also metropolitan areas.

its a sick place. i was born there but i live in toronto. i went there last summer and had a blast. they have similar stores here like kfc, pizza hut, macdonalds and many more. and yes they do have movie theaters. they also have malls in populated areas. most vehicles you'll see on the road are tricycles unless u go to manila(capital city). most of the vehicles you'll see there are taxis. if u go south of the philippines you'll find many beaches since the country is made of thousands of islands. its also very hot. if u go to certain parts of the country you'll find a lot of poverty. one time, we were driving behind a garbage truck when we stopped on a red light. a little boy came behind the garbage truck and started looking for anything he can find. but overall its a great place for vacations :) |
