It is true it's possible you can eat alive fish (very tiny ones) in Japan, if you want to. Only in some special restaurants usually close to the sea. This custom is sometimes blamed by foreigners as cruel, but it is not common way to eat fish in Japan either anyway.

But nobody eats your pet fish. Only cats will do that.
Now I hope they see your post and pretend they want to eat your fish.
I hope you realise they come from very modern society.

Wow -- not only does that sound silly -- but it sounds really ignorant and stupid/racist. Please use common sense. It's not like they're some stupid foreign creatures from outer space that have never seen fish in their lives! They're people and they have brains just like everyone else. I think they can tell if it's in a tank anyway! Goodness!

Actually, in Japan I cannot recall ever seeing anyone who had pet fish, though I do recall a fish tank in a bar with a clown fish it it.

I am sure the person is aware of pet fish and not going to mistake it for sushi.

While some people have said this question was silly, honestly, Japanese people have a different perspective on fish than Americans and such. When I go scuba diving, I go to see pretty fish and talking about that. Some of the Japanese people I have talked with told me how appetizing the fish looked.

Note to rYokucHa, I am not STUDYING Japanese people, nor certainly someone like you, who is purporting to be Japanese. While everyone is aware of tropical fish shops as well as catching goldfish at festivals, I wanted to say that from my personal experience actual ownership of pet fish may be limited. I wanted to point out that there was some cultural differences. And these unfounded calls of racism are detrimental. People come here to ask questions, and we can help them by showing some understanding, rather than condemning or ridiculing them.

definitely not everyone, including the asker, is aware of nettaigyo and kingyo sukui and stuff, so you should have mentioned that instead of your subjective view which is quite wrong in my subjective view. what you wrote is that we have different concept from you guys. but to answer the question you didnt have to include such an argument: first, to own fish as pet is quite common. Next, we dont eat them. No deep reasoning is needed as to whether we eat fish straight from someone's tank obviously prepared for those pets. I provided
absolute truth that said everything to the question, in this sense I am a better answerer.
