Yes, that is a burden that each one of them must bear throughout their lives. |

Singaporeans are laughing at those who laugh at them too! The ban is not on the chewing of gum but rather the import of them. It takes guts for a government to do what is right but may not seem right to others.
In USA, do you know that chewing gum is banned in schools by a bill introduced by US Senator Ted Kennedy), because they have minimal nutritional value? See http://www.commercialalert.org/news/archive/2005/04/kennedy-introduces-bill-to-ban-junk-food-from-schools-nationwide
In UK:
CHEW ON THE FACTS:
* 3p: the cost of a piece of gum
* 10p: the cost of removing a piece of gum
* £150 million: bill paid by councils each year to clean gum off the streets
* £300 million: estimated value of the UK chewing gum market
* 3,000: the number of litter bins provided in Westminster
* 300,000: the estimated number of pieces of chewing gum on Oxford Street
* 17 weeks: the time it takes to clear Oxford Street of chewing gum
* 10 days: the time it takes for Oxford Street to be covered again
* “thousands of pounds” – the amount the industry claims to be investing to trying to develop a less sticky gum residue.
* “not in the near future” – the time they will expect to deliver it.
SURVEY RESULTS:
* A total of 503 people who commute into central London to work were interviewed.
* Almost a quarter of respondents (24.3%) felt that chewing gum makes the worst mess in London, second only to litter at 37.6%.
* 92.2% of respondents stated that they have had chewing gum stuck on their shoes, with almost half stating that they have had it stuck on their clothes (48.7%).
* 62.4% of respondents strongly agreed that chewing gum stuck on the streets is an eyesore with a further 26.4% agreeing.
* 63% of respondents felt that chewing gum companies should take more responsibility for the mess made by chewing gum on the streets.
* Over two thirds supported a small tax on chewing gum to help pay for clearing it up (67.2%) with 5p per pack being the most popular choice (28.8%), followed by 2p (25.6%) and 1p (21.3%). |

Did they laugh at Singapore when Singapore became 2nd wealthiest country in Asia based on GDP, behind Japan? Or the Singapore became the country that had the highest number of millionaire per capita? Do Western countries laugh at Singapore's less than 5% income tax?
Singapore has some strange laws but it works for Singapore. |

I'm an American expat here and at first I thought it was quite silly but I'm not sure if you've ever been to Singapore but it is just one of the cleanest places in the world. Honestly, nothing wrong with a mint! I don't think Singapore cares about the rest of the world laughing, they have low taxes, great laws and is one of the richest and safest countries in the world - who's laughing now? |

Cheers to you Jaff. I guess the whole world is no more laughing after your elaborate explanation. If your country wants to save money please contact the authorities in Singapore to assist. Do you know we banned private gun licenses many years ago - who is laughing now? |

Do you know that Singapore laughs at those countries where their people step/sit on gum because some gum chewer decides that since they can chew gum, they can spit it anywhere. It makes train doors stuck also. Not to mention all that person's germs going everywhere.
I'm Singaporean and very happy that I've never had to scrape gum off my shoes. Laugh all you want. You're probably one of those who spits gum on streets. |

Laugh all you can - I'm not bothered as long as I don't have disgusting gums stuck on my shoes and clothes and the taxes I pay are not wasted on cleaning and clearing public property of filthy gums spitted out by inconsiderate people! |

hey... that's a darn old joke, is the world still laughing at us for this ban? thought that they were laughing at us for drinking recycled toilet water now.
well, to the world that's laughing at the ban of gum...here's another head up... Singapore is famous for recycling, so guess what happened to the disposed condoms here... we recycle them and sold them to wriggly and bubble-yum |

they banned the sale of chewing gum because they want the safety and convenience of their citizens. That chewing gum has caused a multitude of problems when it was stuck on the train door. |

This is your personal perception. Look at the damage and cost of cleaning up the sticky wastes left on the road, train, lift, walkway, wall, rubbish dump. Look around, how many of them actually ensure the sticky waste is properly packed up before dispose it into the rubbish bin? |

Singapore is the most beautiful (unpolluted/littered) urban area in the world.....the ban is a great idea, considering people will get caned (beaten) if they spit it on the ground there. |

Does that include the parts of the world in which people are busy scraping carelessly-discarded chewing gum off the bottom of their shoes? I thought those scraping-people favored that ban. |
