As often as you do dear!
Parts of it are backward but in the cities they are pretty normal.
Honestly speaking, people don't bathe everyday during winter and in places where water is scarce (eg some northern provinces of China). There were a few times in some remote places where I only bathed once in 5-7 days and for me that's gross since I'm from a western country.
Even in the cities there are a lot of people from the country that go to the city without a place to live, hoping to find a job. A lot of these do not bathe everyday.
Yes it sounds really scarey for us westerners, but when you are there you will understand and sympathise with the people who do not have that simple luxury of a hot shower everyday that the rest of us take for granted. Running water is not available everywhere, and in Winter hot water is even more scarce.
So your question is actually not that bad (but does sound pretty funny!) |

No, only stupid Americans bathe.
What sort of questions is that?
Just for the guallible. - YES they bathe!
For they person that said a few days without a bath is normal for some - Even beggers usually have a "sponge" bath with a cloth or something and in places with little or no running water a "bath" using a scoop and bucket is the norm. 5-6 days without a bath is just dirty no matter if your Chinese or a foreigner. |

Of course they do. As a matter of fact Chinese people think we, Americans, don't bathe enough. |

Why do people in the US bathe? Why do people in Canada bathe? Why do people in India bathe? Why are you asking this about China and China only? |

Of course they do. They knew the luxury of long bath since early days. Definitely before the westerners. |

China is an enourmous country. 1.5 billion people!!
In China you will find people cleaner than cleanist American, and you will find people who are dirtier than the dirtiest american... and the interesting thing is that you will find these people in close proximity.
I have been to places in North East China where people wash 3 times in their life. Once when they are born, once when they marry, and once when they die.... That is one extreme.
The other extreme might be an old man in a small town who goes to the bath house everyday and has his skin defoliated every few days... thats cleaner than i am anyway! |

Yes. In fact, they have public baths where you can go and have someone else bath you and give you a massage. It is perfectly legit. It's not a brothel or a front for one. Some of my friends have been. They call it a scrub and rub. Apparantly it's full of old people. I've never been. It's not something that appeals to me. |

Yes, of course. You would actually be surprised at the modernness of the Chinese people google pictures of Shanghai and Hong Kong and you will find cities just as modern or more so than New York or LA. Having been there, I have no doubt that these people take regular showers. However, I do recognize that farmers from western China may still practice bathing habits from centuries ago. |
