Japanese don't hate Americans; but they have a very complex feeling toward Americans due to historical and cultural reasons.
In general, the Japanese have an impression that
1. American education standard is lower than that of Japanese.
2. Americans think that power is justice like a neighborhood bully.
3. Americans take it for granted that they can speak English everywhere.
4. Americans are arrogant and tend to have "We teach you" attitude.
5. Americans are ignorant and insensitive to other cultures, religions and languages.
On the other hand, many Japanese love American music and movies. You would be amazed how they are familiar with them. Japan is the second largest market for American music and movies.
Many American singers and musicians play in Japan every year, and movie stars visit major cities in Japan for the promotion of their new movies.
When you have a chance to talk with Japanese, talk about music, movies and food in easy English. Avoid any sensitive issues, not to mention. Be polite all the time, respect their traditions and show them some interest in their culture (you need some study), then, you can be friends with them. |

I am sure that most people in Okinawa hate American.
Personally I don' hate American, but I think most American are not smart, so simple-minded. |

There's no overriding culture of American-hating there, but many Japanese blame foreigners for the rise of crime in Japan, and you will occasionally get looked at funny for being different. As has been said, this may be elevated in areas around military bases, but I think you'll experience less discrimination as a woman. Just be friendly and willing to learn cultural differences and you'll get along fine. |

No, at least most people don't. The younger generation actually embraces American culture from food to music to movies and etc. Since you are in the military, you may face more problem than ordinary Americans because Japanese who live around the bases have had problems with the military personnel, crimes and noises and etc. |

Some do. Most do not. You have an awful lot of control over how people view you -- if you act like an obnoxious jerk, chances are you'll be treated poorly. On the other hand, if you're nice and respectful, people (all over the world) tend to respond well to that and you'll be treated well. Of course, some people are just mean to everybody, but they're in the minority. So yeah, if you want to be treated well and not hated...examine your own behavior, brush up your knowledge of basic Japanese culture and manners before you go, and treat others as you would want to be treated. Also remember that you're a guest in their country, especially when you're off the base. |

I hate "Ignorant Americans who comes to Japan by getting insprired by recent Movies about Japan."
They come to Japan with stereotype.
Personally, I like educated Americans but I so hate Ignorant Americans in general. I want them out of my town. |

Japanese don't *hate* other nations. Hate is too strong word used about Japanese. Japanese hate mass murderers, child molesters, dirty politicians, but if you think about it, who doesn't?
I can admit that recently I have noticed an overall negative feeling, caused by the global crisis, which was triggered by the US economy. It had very tragic impact on Japanese society, with thousands of people losing their jobs and homes, increased criminal activity and unprecedented deficit for the biggest companies.
I often watch Japanese business shows, and both the anchor and the commentators at least once mention the role of the US in this. Recently, a high rank official in the Ministry of Welfare appeared on such a show and declared that Japan has turned into an US-dependent country. Though the anchor stopped his tirade, these words were not considered a gaffe by the media.
Around Christmas, I was surprised to see instead of the usual Christmas Hollywood stuff, movies about the very human side of the biggest war criminal , Gen. Tojo, and about the bombing of Tokyo, with a dramatic last scene when the main character , very cute Japanese girl, screams at the US pilots "Didn't you kill enough people already, why don't you stop, I'm not afraid of you!" and being shot by one of the pilots.Thats on Christmas Eve.
If you are in the army, well, since there have been some accidents (murder, rape included), people are especially cautious about army people.
As a conclusion I can tell you that Japanese don't hate Americans, but the current shocking crisis has shaken the society and they have become little bit more sensitive and closed.Negative attitude is not hate, though, and you will get such attitude only if you are arrogant and disrespectful. Yes, and talk very quietly, otherwise you'll sound arrogant.
And if you wait for about 6 months, the situation will stabilize and people will become more opened. |

Some do, most don't....Near military bases is more of a problem because of violent acts ( rapes / murders ) commited by US Marines there. If you're a woman, there shouldn't be any problems. |

This myth is wearing a little bit thin.
The Japanese people actually hold westerns in very high regard, but that does not mean instant acceptance. A foreigner (gaigin) is always a foreigner, no matter how long you might remain in Japan or how well you might speak the language. That doesn't mean that you will automatically be looked down upon or will be treated badly, but there will be situations where you will definitely understand that you are not being readily accepted. There are some bars and clubs that will refuse service to non-Japanese customers, and you might find that getting admittance into some upper end restaurants that require introductions but this applies also to Japanese customers so don't feel as if you're being singled out.
In the Japanese way of seeing things, there are good foreigners and bad foreigners. A good foreigner will be polite and not aggressive and might even speak a little Japanese and understand a bit of Japanese etiquette. A bad foreigner will just not care. When I was in Japan, I was never treated with anything less than great curtosey and kindness and I was an American woman traveling alone. Of course you will run into some jerks, and you do sometimes feel like you are being watched and evaluated before ajudgmentt is made, if you can show that you arecourteouss and understand a bit of how the Japanese do things, you'll find things go much more smoothly. |

whoever said that the japanese don't hate any race your extremely wrong. They do hate the chinese, and they are apparently attunedd to some sort of smell the chinese have. As what I've seen and experienced. The japanese don't really hate us, they just find us feeble minded, hard-headed, hot- headed, and ignorant to language, culture ( other than food), and that we think we know everything.... and they are kind of right. And the women are women, white people aren't really discriminated against there, except russians, so as long as your not black( only because there's not many there), russian, or chinese, and you are interested in other culture and willing to learn there language. You might just be Okay.
ps. I wouldn't show off your millitary uniform to much around there |

Some of them do because of the war and the military bases, but most young Japanese people embrace American pop culture.
The only people that will have a hard time in japan are Black People. Being American is a way to make a lot of friends in Japan, provided that you are not of African Descent. |

Not really. Because of the war and stuff Japanese people actually kind of respect Americans because they lost to them. They actually respect English speanking people. |
