Do people really become delirious when they're not getting enough sleep?

"delirious" as in uncontrolled excitement or emotion leading to a mad whirl of pleasure

There are three words that start with "S" that will make you delirious when they're not getting enough of. Sleep is one,S-- is another and a good S--- is the other. Each, in a different way will give an uncontrolled excitement or emotion leading to a mad whirl of pleasure.

Do not agree with your definition of "delirious". There are potentially very serious adverse effects to sleep deprivation. In fact even if you get the wrong type of sleep, you still can be hurt.
Sleep is vital to good health.

There are two basic types of sleep. There is light semi-conscious sleep and the deeper REM (rapid eye movement)sleep.REM sleep is "dream" sleep. Some people think they never dream but the truth is everyone dreams. Not everyone remembers their dreams. Dreams are critical to mental health. If you deprive people of REM sleep it will cause serious psychotic damage.
If going without sleep is so deliriously fun and good why is sleep deprivation a form of torture? Why is it used to break down POWs for interrogation?

Aref H4
Never thought of it that way.

In my humble opinion, delirium is when someone's fever makes the mercury jump out the thermometer. Or, when warriors jump in the melee and are carried away by bloodlust. Never heard of lack of sleep achieving the same result.

Of course, you may have something there. I remember having come from a wake and when I came home at dawn, I felt so potent sexually, and the waitress even ran after me when I quit the resto for breakfast. I thought it was my enhanced sexuality, but turned out I forgot to pay for the meal.

no, just sleepy.

Bail out BS
If I don't get enough sleep I would feel like I just took a puff of a medically approved substance. This is what I call uncontrolled excitement or delirium that leads to God knows what. So I better hit the sack early or all hell will break loose tonight...

i guess jongbong will be the best answerer.

kojak got the medically accepted findings.

missy, a person should at least have 6 hours of sleep to function well. not getting a lot of sleep will cause not only delirium but stress and depression.

Over fatigue (palpitation, irritability, disoriented.. and so much more.) It's a health and mental threat. <*-*>

I wouldn't say mad whirlwind of pleasure, but its a good way to look like a fool...slurring your words and such...as a matter of fact studies have shown that when it comes to driving, sleep deprivation has similar effects to being highly intoxicated!

yes, they can also experience hallucinations after several days without sleep if you go more than about 6 or seven days without sleep your body will actually shut down and without medical attention you will die, you die from sleep deprivation faster than starving to death

mcied150
i would think so...i havent ever stayed up long enough to find out i mean the longest i ever have wanted to stay up was 30 hours so....

Yes it is true, even if it seems paradoxical. The confused state of excitement is called delirium yappertremens and can be best described as temporary and mild (read: wild) insanity, a perfect storm resulting from prolonged lack of sleep. Individuals suffering from this condition are known to experience an exhilarating sensation almost similar to that caused by mind-altering substances, and in the case of some female subjects, shopping.

I’ve read about this finding in a lengthy treatise submitted by a group of Filipino scientists who conducted a study on 24 volunteers from Seattle who were forcibly deprived of sleep for 72 hours. Their conclusion was consistent with your statement, although the interview with the participants was cut short as they were all raving incoherently in a moment of mad whirl of pleasure.

yes, it's called euphoria. I once stayed up for three days, straight...and then I slept for three days...missed a whole day! Woke up, and thought it was Tuesday, it was really Wednesday!

The voice in my head says no. Not really. But I don't know if I should believe that or not?!

Leading to a mad whirl of pleasure? More like a mad whirl of mental & physical pain, anguish, and hallucinations.
