In the eyes of the world, Malaysia is seen as a model democratic country which practices fair election, freedom of speech, press freedom, freedom of expression and a human rights friendly country
To Malaysians or even foreigners living in Malaysia, they know that the picture that the Malaysian government painted to show to the world is not that nice looking afterall.
Democray - yes, Malaysia practices this ideology and allows the people to choose their leaders BUT behind this practice there is always some sort of conspiracy going on. The present government has governed the country for far too long which is actually not a problem if the government had governed the country well but in Malaysia this is not the case. This long period with lack of opposition strenght had led the government to become complacent, arrogant, corrupted and deceitful and the people at the government cannot come to terms that today, Malaysians are more well educated and well informed and their support for them has eroded. To safeguard their position, they are willing to resort to things which they shouldn't have done to continue to stay in power. It is a known fact that the recent election and the past elections were not fairly conducted and even after the results had been announced, these government people failed to accept the peoples' wish in a graceful manner.
Freedom of speech, press, expression - yes, Malaysia claims that all these freedoms are well upheld here but in reality, the "freedom" only applies if one express something favorable to the government otherwise one would be suppressed through warning, intimidation, arrests etc.
Human rights - need not have to say much. Malaysia is one very unique country where constitutionalized discrimination is practiced. Many policies are drafted to favor certain section of the society. |

I think its improving slowly....I notice recently with the media that they now cover stories that they wouldn't have done so like 2 years ago. However, I don't believe in 'absolute' freedom, as with each freedom must be practiced responsibly.
For example, we don't need racists people making racists remarks in the name of freedom of speech, or hateful people like Stardust here. To Stardust: You'll have to murder all Muslims for that. |

Too much control on the freedom of speech! Newspaper being controlled, radio, magazines, cannot protest, no life! Who can hear our voices? How can we shout out our problems? |

In my country, you can bash people from the President down the line.. freedom of speech and press freedom to the max.
...and still, it is not helping us much to solve our problems in corruption. |
