Do you agree? Filipino songs/music are better and world class compared to Filipino movies?

Movies: Cinematography is bad. Directing is bad. Special effects bad. Pero one thing I realized, although the acting is bad, it is mainly because of how they are directed to act. "American Adobo" acting was great. Likewise with "The Debut" But they are both US-made movies by Filipinos. One thing I noticed is that they are getting better.

Music: the Philippines has some of the best singing talents in the world (Leah Salonga, Banig, Regine V.), pero the use of musical instruments is predictable, elementary; uses a lot of synthesizers and keyboards. Unlike mainstream (US) music where the basic instruments are used (Drums, guitars, bass guitar, maybe keyboards) but the melody and originality are incredible. Also, the OPM voices are being flooded out by the instruments. The last "original" and carefree era has got to be the 70s - the band and swing era. A lot of tagalog songs but not corny. The songs make you dance. Great use of band instruments and originality, not the constant effort to sing love songs in English. Don't get me wrong, there were some great talents and songs in the 80s, 90s and early 00s. But they have all been the same. Puro love songs ng love songs, and remakes. Enough already!
Personally, I think that there has been a Filipino "Musical Renaissance" lately, thanks to groups like Eraserheads and now 6 Cycle Minds. I have not cared for OPMs for the last decade and a half (since The Dawn), until I heard songs from Eraserheads and 6 Cycle Minds. Very original and unorthodox. Finally, a re-birth of Filipino music that would showcase not just our talent, but our creativity as well.

I agree with you 100%. Our Ryan Cayabyab's, Kuh Ledesma's, Gary Valenciano's and many more could really hold their own in the world stage. Unfortunately, the same quality of artistry and talent is no longer evident in our film industry. Where are the successors of Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, atbp? Why is the gestation period taking so long?

correct. dont you just love ugoy ng duyan, pasko na sinta ko, nandito ako.... tagalog love songs made and sung in the 80's and early 90's by ogie alcasid, jam morales and gary v. don't include yucky pa-cute songs, ha? I dont understand, why the likes of regine, jaya, sarah g., have to do the "birit" thing? dont you just hate the wwawaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa huwaaaa thing they do? why not sing the song the way it suppose to be, mellow, easy to the ear.

Yes, I totally agree with you. As I've mentioned on my previous postings Filipino movies are corny.

100% YES. Although there is a significant change in the quality for the past few years, there are a lot of improvements needed.

I fully agree! The only good Pinoy movies I've seen are the ones made by Lino Brocka.

I agree too. What I don't understand is why Filipino movies look so old, even if they are bran new?
- Music here is excellent, but only the underground stuff. (HBE, mustasa, messed up, Saving private Jimberly, even, Black Haven... BMS)
- Pop is a cheap copy from the states

For once I agree with you. I love how Filipino songs are made but the movies really does need improvement especially action movies. Action movies here are all about a guy killing a bunch of goons in an abandoned warehouse and I'm getting pretty sick of that.

Indeed we do perfectly well in composing and expressing our emotions through music!! I hope we have more new, original and really good ones....and i don;t only mean more singers (i like to think that every pinoy is a natural born singer!) but also songwriters/musicians...

I still believe our imagination is very creative and can be original when properly honed... but generally, we are not too accurate when expressed in film since we are easily influenced by what the local/global market dictates.

YES! The flow, beat, and lyrics of the songs are world class. However, the movies are not as good as the music (too much cliche, copying,and sometimes half-baked plots, but there are still good ones that appear sometimes).

i absolutely agree with you ping. i just adore opm songs and our music artists! though, it makes me sick hearing our good artists singing remaked songs. it makes me wanna think they don't know how to compose(or where the h e l l are our composers?!), and that they lack creativity and originality. this is just my opinion...

filipinos are a bunch of karaoke singers.
I work for an organization that spent about $2.8M into the Philippines in 2006 and a little bit more by the end of this year, by way of programs and projects in education and healthcare.
