It all depends where in China you live !!
Yes,some Chinese do eat dogs. But that's only among minority peoples like Korean in the northeast China and among Cantonese in the South. They are uncivilized, they eat everything, snakes, maggots, birds, the most alarming is placenta ,yes they do eat baby placenta in Canton. It is them who is responsible for transporting their OWN evil practice to USA ,who take it granted that the whole Chinese do the same evil.
I live in North China, people in this areas are well bred, religious ,merciful and civil. In no way will we beat a dog ,which is deemed as our closest pal,let alone eat one!!!!
What i wanna say however is this:there are Chinese and Chinese in China. Some are evil, and I hate them no lesss than you do.BUT some are no less kind than you are !!!So PLEASE,PLEASE,my American brothers ,when you wanna bash China next time,be specific!!!!!!! |

Some do.
Koreans are better known for it.
Of course we eat milk squirted from cows, bird flesh, internal organs like liver, fishies, crawfish (mudbugs) and other stuff that could seem strange. |

most of us don't. especially those staying outside china. it's not our diet.
ok, here goes (from my previous answer):
"chinese will eat anything with four legs except a table
and anything that flies, except a Jumbo Jet.", OR
Chinese will eat any living creatures, that crawl, that swim, that fly, that dig, etc. except creatures that had already turned its belly towards the sun (ie, dead)....
having said that, i hope to clear misconceptions about chinese eating habits:
china, has a history for more that 5000 years. most part of it, they are either warring against each other, or defending against foreign forces. that's one of the contribute factors that lead the majority of chinese peasants living in poverty. (hence, many courageous chinese traveled all around the globe looking for jobs.)
being broke & desperately hungry, they had to look for food. so they scour for edibles: bugs, worms, trees (tree barks & leaves), plants, etc , to fill their family's stomachs. or, make medicines out of it.
when they do rear or hunt animals (monkeys, dogs, cats, crocodiles, goats, sheeps, deers, cows, etc), they fully utilized every parts of the animals, as it is wasteful to throw away any part of it. innards can be cooked & eaten, bones can make their soup taste better, etc.
my grandparents & their village had to survived on tree barks & leaves during the china revolution, and my grandparents were forced to fled from their motherland, so as to find jobs in southeast asia. then came world war II, they had to eat rodents & roaches, during the japanese occupation in singapore. (i never asked them which tastes better though...)
now, the chinese are seeing better times. eating dogs, cats, snakes, sharks' fins & bugs maybe unneccesary? i don't know. i can't speak for all chinese. but if you traveled to remote parts of china, there are still many chinese in poverty.
therefore, its no surprise that these food later progressed into a 'cuisine', when there is a new method to make it taste better.
rather than assuming that chinese eats many unpalatable food, let's say chinese are more resilient & resourceful.
if you offer me rodents, animals' innards, deep- fried scorpions or snakes' bile, i won't eat them. i prefer chicken & pork, with rice. and so are many chinese around the world. |

Confucius say: "Waste not, eat anything with its back facing the sky."
Ever since then the Chinese stuck to the tradition and practice of eating cats and dogs, puppies and kittens and other creatures. They tasted so good that the culture spread fast and furious to countries like Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Phillipines, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries where there are chinese communities. |

Yes they do. Seeing them hanging as meat in the market is a little...well...different!
In actuality, it is not sick. Some people, maybe most, from the west may think so, but there, it is normal. And besides, they only eat certain types of dog.
I mean, how much meat is on a teacup poodle, by god! Sorry, that joke was just for you. You see, you should not judge a people by their eating habits, but by the individual. |

Thats sick.Thats like eating your best friend. What is wrong with you people. There is everything else you can eat to fill your fat stomach besides an innocent dog that would be your loyal & best friend for life. Also dogs are smart & have been known to save their owners lives,,they lead the blind,,they are trained to sniff out terrorist etc.I think it is discusting to eat an animal that is a pet.Accually,,I dont think anyone should eat any animal.I never eat anything with a face,,lol. |

Yes, chinese do eat dogs, but not as much as Koreans, Koreans eat them during summer..or maybe anytime in the year. The chinese..only during winter...and those days have to be VERY cold in order for them to eat dogs, or else they would not |

You sirry Amelican foors! Dere is noting long with us eating dogs! you clazy people eat cow and other disgusting stuff rike chitrins! You no like my Chity Shrimp? My Chity Mongorian beef??
Ok, seriously, yes, they eat dogs there. But, in India, cows are gods - they think we are f*ing crazy to be eating cows... One thing is for certain - meat is meat. Whether it comes from a cow, a horse, a dog or a bird, meat is meat. You eat what you have. They have alot of dog, not alot of land for grazing cattle. Same in Japan - thats why they eat fish. Just because they eat dog in China doesnt make them "sick" - its not like they are eating your pet! ow many America kids on farms actually raise then eat their sheep/cows/chickens?? Tell me thats not sick! |

Some will, does it matter?
The culture is different, you cannot judge a people using foreign ideals and expect them to understand your reaction. They will use their own set of ideals to judge you and come up with, what you may think, is a bizarre foible, like the previous poster said about spitting and blowing noses into handkerchiefs.
It may be thought to be a disgusting habit to some eyes but we have no right to condemn them for it. But as with many things, we ask ourselves where do we draw the line. It's a tough subject, but nowhere as near the practice of stoning that is sometimes is carried out in some African countries after a women is found guilty of adultery. That too is a different custom but eating dog or water beetles pales in comparison to that. Perspective... |

Yes, the Chinese eat dog. It is more common in the South but in the North there is a large Korean community, they are Chinese citizens of Korean descent, and they tend to eat a lot. They usually only eat a mid-sized orange colored dog, and they raise them as food, just like pigs and sheep.
The first time I saw it was in South China where they were selling dog meat in the market and had the head hanging above the meat. This is a habit here in China.
There is even a saying "挂羊头卖狗肉“ it say "hang the sheep head and sell dog meat". Means you are ripping someone off by selling them something that is not worth what they are paying or by selling them something less than what they advertised.
I'm still not used to this idea of eating dog meat but I just try to ignore it! |

Yes, they do, but you can't say it is sick any more than you can say it is sick to eat a cow or a duck or a deer, etc. It makes me sad when I see a truckload of dogs going to the slaughter, and I sincerely wish they wouldn't eat them, but who are we to judge? They think we are sick for blowing our snot into a tissue and holding it in our hands until we dispose of it. |

dogs, pigs ears, chicken's feet, pigs intestines, eels, not everybody does but i've seen it. i would say that the food in the u.s. compared to the cuisine in china is slop. we could take a lot of good lessons from the chinese. they have the best food i've ever eaten. |

guys. even though china is developing country, most of the people are poor. let's say people were poor and hungry long time ago. they got nothing to eat and couldn't afford to buy. so they ate everything they could find. not only dogs. even rats, snakes, cats, birds (which sre rare seen already), everything who's "back facing the sky" can be eaten. so it became a custome i guess...
hope it's reasonable to you |

Yeah they eat everything and anything over there. I was living there for two years in Guangzhou and saw a smoked dog hanging in a window of a restuarant. |

yes and they also eat cats and rats (especially in Guangdong Province). university students (friends) would catch rats to cook for a delicious (they said!) snack -- not city rats though; the univesity was in the rural area outside of the city. i frequently saw cats and dogs hanging in restaurant windows or along the cooking areas of outside eateries. |
