there is a fine line between disciplining a child and violent physical abuse. a child has no basic moral discernment and probably won't know the difference between right and wrong unless he or she experiences the consequences of being right and wrong. it all boils down to good parenting and proper decision making. just spank your kid when there's a good reason to do so... otherwise the kid will just grow up one day and think that he or she can get away with being foolish.
this may be the only aspect in my personal principles that i'd naturally feel conservative but i am for spanking simply because it worked on me and it's worked for a lot of people here when we were kids:
- i learned how to control my emotions because my parents spanked me each time i'd act like a brat.
- i respect women more because my parents, tito, and grandparents spanked me so hard when i hit my sister.
- i'm more sensitive with my choice of words and think before i say something because my mom spanked me when i talked back at her.
- i've never had a criminal record, i've never attempted drugs, i don't have any murderous bad blood with anyone... all because my parents spanked me each time i became foolish.
spanking is not about parents imposing their authority, it's about kids learning the value of basic and universal truths like respect, honor, and proper discipline. parents who don't spank their kids (and just resort to a lousy punishment like "grounding" them) are CHICKEN because they don't want the responsibility of training their own kids to be decent grownups. |

Yes, I do that to my son when he was still a child. And after all his crying, I would explain to him why mommy did that. I also let him know that mommy's spanking did not make her love him less. |

In my parent’s time and in childhood, almost all kids were spanked by their parents and almost none seems to hold it against their parents. It’s different nowadays where parents can get sued for spanking and kids are brave to threaten their parents by calling a child welfare agency. For me I believe that spanking is the last resort of disciplining a child when talking, grounding, and other methods doesn’t work. And spanking should be a 2-step method. First spank then next explain to the child why he got spanked. |

Im korean and in the korean culture spanking is allowed. It is okay to spank. Even teachers have the right to spank the child. It is a way of disciplining and teaching your children.
My mother did it to me and i believe it was a good choice. I know people say that its abuse. But i dont think so. Child abuse to me is when you take it to far. And use your own judgment on what is exactly too far. When your hitting to hurt then to me that is way too much.
Spanking to teach a lesson is better. Talking to your child is always good as well. But either one alone will not work. You have to do both so that the child knows why your spanking. Talking alone is no punishment and children being children will always do what ever they did wrong again. And spanking alone with no explanation is punishment but not an affective punishment.(they'ld probably rebel when they get older) When you do both, your child will learn that your not doing this to hurt them. Your child will understand that you love them and what they have done is wrong and shouldnt do again. |

Yes but only as a heavy punishment for a grave offense.
I didn't spank my kids every time they misbehaved. They knew beforehand what spanking meant. It was reserved for something they did that was unforgivable or unpardonable and for repeatedly doing the same despite the warnings.
The bible said it all..."Spare the rod and spoil the child." |

You have to define first spanking. Because different people have different perspective. If spanking is defined apart from abusive acts( just to inflict injury to the child ), then spanking ( not leaving bruises ) can be accepted as a way of disciplining a child.
For example, a child will not touch a flame of a candle again if he has already touched it once. Much of our learning is based on experience.
I myself have been disciplined by my parents in the traditional way ( being spanked at the buttocks and being asked to kneel in front of our altar ). Now that I have matured, I understood why my parents did that to me and I am grateful. If not for that, I could have been a drug addict or probably be dead by now. Just compare the youth in our grandparents days and our youth today. Because much of the our old days practices are marked barbaric and brutal to some people( who proudly admit they are experts in rearing a child and embraced their by the book methods ). Just see how our youth have grown today, are "expert's" ways effective? |

I am not a parent yet but this custom is quite harsh and brutal to do for the little ones. But how can you discipline without letting your self being the boss or who's in-charge? Take USA for example there's a lot of decadent children because of this, children dial 119 for help because they spank by their parents. But I think this method should be done for a reason if the child cannot be discipline in democratic way. My mother usually spank and pinch me when I do wrong when I was I child, but today I love my mother dearly. In fact I'm searching for a woman liked her. |

When they are younger you can swat them on the butt to get their attention. At about 4/5 sitting in a corner worked. Yelling is a form of Verbal abuse. Don't yell or scream at them or tell them you're going to do something (slap your face). Thats just bad. |

Yes. This practice is accepted, as long as you spank gently with your bare hand. You spank not to punish or hurt the child, but to show the child that what he/she's doing is wrong. And an explanation on why he/she was spanked is also important. |

Spanking is necessary especially ..no specifically during a young age. Beating is another story. |

I hate spanking. It only means unhappy childhood life.
I admit, I experienced it but when I think of it, all I did was to laugh :)) for I was able to overcome such maltreatment. Oh, those were the days!
As as result, when I took care of my niece, I never spank her. We just kept on arguing telling her not to do this or that again. I even made monologues to make her understand what I meant by not doing this or that again. And there were times when I even told her that if she won't listen, I would cry and that's the time she would agree with me.
Oh, I am so proud of her for she's now a very matured and loving niece of mine :)
Spanking a child will only destroy her self-esteem as well as her character.
GOD BLESS THE CHILD. |

Yes but it should be used sparingly ONLY WHEN when words, lessons and the reward&punishment system will not do the trick. But there should also be a limit to where you hit the child. Say for example only in the b*tt where it is less likely to cause damage other than inflict physical pain. And again, as I have initially said, it is the LAST resort. There are a thousand and one other ways to discipline a child. |

You never hit a child or a woman for that matter, if a child is out of control you can hold it but you dont hit it,period. |

NEVER.
A child can retain those awful memories of being spanked which can taint his or her life forever. |

it really depends on the type of family... but in my case, I have never treated like that before, and yet, I think I'm disciplined enough, I suppose... |

No never. It's wrong and it's teaching them to be abusive as well. Kids are not born perfect. They learn by example. |

There are too many ways to discipline a child. But spanking is way too primitive. Hurting a child is hurting his confidence to strive to become independent. In the old days, when education was more of a privilege, people tend to hurt their children because of poor knowledge on the concept of personality building, and thought that children are like their pet dogs that needs to be spanked to follow their instructions.
Discipline is not born out of fear, but of respect. |
