No, I don't think that's strange at all.
I think it would be strange not to talk about it. |

The stuff your talking about has most likely been done, there yesterdays news.
Boycotting the Olympics with the growing unrest in China is todays news.
Finally who says that both are not being done.
Alternatively are schools in China having debates on is it good to let Taiwen. Tibet etc have there freedom. Is it wrong for China to send arms to Zimbabwe (sp) in a time of unrest?
"Zimbabwe. Nonsense. This is January 2008 stuff"
Ok, so why is there a Chinese cargo ship off the south African coast waiting to off load its cargo of arms.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7354428.stm
http://www.itv.com/News/Articles/Chinese-send-arms-to-Zimbabwe-712437789.html
I could go on for ages with links but I only see publish dates quoted within the last 7 days. Not Jan 2008.
Where you thinking of one of the other counties.
Edit: Even so troubles are happening now, and not back then.
A wise idea would be to let the ship wait in dock until the troubles are over and see who is the official elected government is and therefore the official owner of those weapons. |

We Americans just like to debate whatever's hot in the news, whether or not there are actually more important issues going on in the world (there usually are). You have to know that about us and forgive us on that account.
And you'll have to forgive me, too, for correcting your grammar:
...schools are having...
Isn't there anything to debate...
...from Iraq a good...
But I knew what you meant. :-) |

Um I personally go to a "Western" school, and I am Taiwanese, by the way,
I joined the Debate team, and we do a lot more than debating about the Olympics alone.
It is just a part of all our debates, it doesn't mean that's what we believe, just a debate strategy.
I mean, people in china have a strong sense of nationalism to their country, due to the propaganda of Mao Ze Dong, that has STILL lasted all these years, i mean sure, some of the stuff he said was true but i really can't believe some of the stupid lies that he made that many people in china still support and are stubborn about. and about the Olympics? FYI, the only reason no one has been debating other olympic countries is cause china is not exactly in the best condition to host the olympics, have you SEEN the signs for the 2008 Olympics that China is making? like simple bathroom signs, traffic signs, etc. ?People make fun of them so much for their translations into english (they mostly end up sounding funny or vulgar ) when they're not meant to be. That alone is a bad sign. I'm not saying the olympics should be boycotted, I'm just saying they could make improvements, Just cause I live in america doesn't mean I like everything that our government does. I mean, it's not like everyone in America is a politician!
We also debate jobs, Iraq, and especially presidential candidates.
Many people are just voting for whoever is in their party, but everyone should make sure they know what issues their candidates are actually supporting, and not just vote cause Hilary is female and they are feminists, or other dumb things like that. |

How many Western Schools have you been to? |

No, it's a human rights issue.
The common debates are over cooked, when something "different" pops up all professors, instructors and teachers jump on it.
How would you like being a professor for 15 years and ALWAYS debating the same thing every semester with X amount of students and X amount of classes? You wouldn't, so when there is a new event it brings back the energy of the original debate.
Just like you probably get tired of telling a story over and over again after a personal event, professors get tired of the same debates year after year. |

First thing first, you are a troll, sponsored by your government propogating chinese propoganda that the world is not buying.
Second thing Americans, and the free world discuss every topic under the sun, because they are not put in prison or hanged for discussing any controversial ideas.
Now a question to you. Why your government mute the voice of students at Tinanmen Square in 1988? |

well for the president thing i have heard that teachers are not aloud to talk about political things in school and i think the same goes for teachers jobs and things
and for the iraq thing most schools debate about it to but not as much cause they want something new like olympics |

I would think that its weird if it were the only debate being held in those schools. Or, if it were debated or discussed in a class that has nothing to do with social studies or English. If it were discussed in a math or science class I would be really worried. |

I do find it strange that we debate about the Olympics but i guess its a cover up of the war or something.
Teachers jobs are getting cut because the schools aren't getting enough funding from taxes.
Withdrawing the troops from Iraq is a bad thing because we need to finish the job or the war on terrorism will never end.
Mccain should be the president because he has the best ideas. |

I think Western Schools are strange for reasons other than the one's you mentioned. For starters it is beyond me how the wealthiest most powerful and politically influential nation on earth can be ranked 25th in the world in terms of education. I suppose there is something to be said about this especially when you look at our current economic state and the fact that American schools gave us C students like George Bush. |

That is wierd. The olympics are supposed to be peaceful and not a 'hot' topic. |

maybe it is because the debaters don't know much else that is "hot" right now. |

I agree with Manchu Royalty. People should definitely research about Tibet and China`s history before they say anything.
Anyways, I don`t really think its odd. I guess, its a good way to get students thinking about things. Personally, I`m Chinese but I can relate to how western countries would feel if they didn`t know the whole truth. ... Am I making sense? o.o
By the way, why would people BOYCOTT Olympics? The olympic spirit has nothing to do with Tibet right now. They just picked this time because the Olympics has a huge impact on China. |

first of all points off for grammer
second the upcoming olympics are a big deal for China's economic and social growth and liberalization.
The government has violently forced the monks into hiding.
If we were to boycott the olympics they would have to allow the monks to demonstrate for democracy in order to remain in good standings with the rest of the world.
And by allowing democracy demonstrations more Chinese people would be exposed to ideas that oppse the current authoritarian regime.
and that's off the top of my head at 11:00 at night |
