yes,, it was their stepping stones...
there are lots of them...
and sometimes they could not leave the streets, even they became succesful they are still part of where they start.. this kind of ppl are humble, no matter how big they became, they look from where they came..
sometimes what you see on them is not what you really think they are..

I am from Digos City, it's about 56 kilometres away from Davao city. Manny Paquiao was born and raised in General Santos City but I recalled when he's still staying in Matti Capitol, Digos City. He's there training to become a boxer. I never met him personally but I heard so many things about him, how he had to wash dishes in a very small "carenderia" or restaurant so just for him to support himself so he could pursue boxing. He has another brother who's also a boxer named Bobby and man he's good too! I saw him in one of his fights, they usually have that every year to celebrate Digos Day. Manny is a very nice guy. My father sometimes gave him tips if he asked him to buy something for him and his friends like if they need somebody to buy them beer lol! But now look at him he's very famous! But he's such a humble guy. He still likes to come buy to our small place in Matti and help the people and there. |

Have you heard the story or Hendry Sy? He used to sell shoes in Quiapo. it became a small store and became SM or Shoe Mart. Now SM is one of the biggest chain of malls in the Philippines and SM is now Super Mall not just shoe mart. |

I know someone who used to sell fruits and vegetables in a road in Bagiuo. Now he has his own farm, his own factory, the works. He's worked very hard to arrive where he is now and he deserves all his success. |

I used to be a fish/fruit vendor on a bicycle when I was in elementary. I was also into buy and sell of used bottles/newspapers, scrap metals. Now, I have my own house and lot, a car and a successful career in IT(Computers).I also have some businesses.
Would you consider that? hehehe.. |

if you don't mind a general answer -- the chinese filipinos. three or so decades ago, most sidewalk and street vendors are chinese who sell taho, shine shoes, buy and sell reusable junk, etc. Now they're tycoons.
You have to admire their business prowess. |

sorry but the story of Henry Sy and Lucio Tan being shoe and egg peddlers are urban legends that refuse to die. i used to believe it myself.
to answer the question, if you're strictly referring to sidewalk vendors, i don't know of anybody (and doubt if there ever will be one) who will become very successful in the Phils. slightly successful, yes why not? but not to the point of being widely known in large areas of the archipelago, or becoming influential figures in politics or business.
the filipino-chinese have done this many many times over but through their heirs, not themselves per se. |
