here at Y!A it's not a matter of being correct or wrong. just like in your story, it's more a matter of what the asker wants to see. and that is to be expected because choosing a best answer is a personal choice. just like the king in your story who rewarded not necessarily the one who told the truth but the one who said something pleasing to his ears. |

initially thats how i felt, for i always strive to give my best in each & every answer, that is why i am particulaly choosey in which qs to answer, & i still am.
but in time, i finally realized thats it is ultimately the asker who has the prerogative to choose the best answer as he or she see fit, just as in your perfect analogy.
& if the asker elects to put the question to a vote, then thats ok too. & with that i also came to the conclusion that even though voting might be a democratic way of choosing the best answer, it still doesnt guarantee that the 'real' best answer will get the most votes. so what the heck. ask, answer & be merry! |

I have to always think that way, celestine. Every serious question, esp. the open-ended ones, deserves the best of what I have to offer. So I give it my all. If I am just gonna be half-hazard about it, then I'd rather not answer at all. Now, it's fine with me if my answer is not picked as "best" - that's the asker's prerogative anyway, but at least I have the satisfaction that I didn't make a fool of myself.
I like your story, by the way; it parallels some of the goings-on here at YAP where everyone seems to have an agenda of sorts. Oh well, to each its own! |

Yes, I did have a situation like that recently. The question was "How do I find a job in Mesa?" Mesa is a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona, and was posted in the Phoenix category. I answered this question to the best of my ability.
Another person posted an answer to this question - "If you mean MENSA. Then I would suggest going to the mensa.org website".
I don't see how this answers the question, but somehow THIS answer got the Best Answer..... chosen by the ASKER!!!
Link to the question and answers - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AiVq1A8s2yOLEGFz47Aa3Nnty6IX?qid=20070624161824AAuLKh1&show=7#profile-info-lNiw0aiLaa
I think I can safely say that neither the question asker nor the person who got the "Best Answer" belong to Mensa. |

when i do answer a question, it's really meant to help or it is based on what i know. i'm not after the best answer everytime. it's just that... to help. |

How true...some, do want to know the true answer. But most want some one to make them feel good about the answer they believe anyway.
Yes, many time I believe mine should be the best answer, but alot of times I see some one else that should have been the best answer and they did not get it either. |

Not really. Most the times you would notice that too many people have good answers to one question. But its up to the person asking to decide which answer to choose as best.
I couldn't even believe that some people are just obsessed about earning points? What is with that? |

nope. as long as i can help with my suggestions, it's okay with me. some people think this thing is some sort of competition, which i think is wrong. about the king in your story, he is the type of person who is easily fooled by words. he didn't notice that the interpretations were the same because one was said in a negative tone while the other in a positive tone. |

Yes, sometimes I feel my answer was the best but is that a bias free observation........I doubt it very much.
Other times I might get BA even though there are other answers that I feel are much better than mine.
It is upto the questioner to decide who she/he thinks gave the BA.
Your story is good as it shows you can say the same thing a different way and get different results even though the answer is the same. This is what I am trying to point out to WELL. If only he would take note. |

Nope .....
I don't care about if they choose me to have the Best answer. What I care about is the way I answer questions.... Before clicking the 'submit' bar I should be smiling first. The answer that I will give was the answer that my heart wants. |

Personally, I don't really crave for my answers to be chosen as best. I mean, it's nice and all, but not worth killing over. But there are times when I look at some past answers and notice that somebody who gave a completely ridiculous answer got the 10 points. And it peeves me when I had answered that particular Q with all that I feel and know, just for somebody who says "No way!" to be chosen as best.
It all dependes on the perspective of the asker, I guess. No matter how wise or honest your answer was, if the asker feels like your Answer does not coincide with his initial beliefs, then you have no chance against somebody whose thoughts syncrinize with the asker's. A person usually thinks that he who gives him what he wants to hear is the best person around, while somebody who "dares" deviate is wrong.
Oh well. Life is unfair sometimes. ^_^ |

i'm just thinking 2 points every my answer. if someone choose my answer as best answer, i'm very thankful for it. |

yeah, sometimes i do. every time i answer a question, i think, "great! two more points!" then if my answer got picked as best answer, i'd just be grateful for the additional 10 points. |
