Do you think Malaysia will be a developed nation by 2020?

I believe they can.

I believe so because Malaysia is far much better developed than other countries around the region. However, to ensure it will happen, there are areas and systems need improvements.
Standard of living in Malaysia could be considered as good but not excellent in some areas! Industralization as well as modernization only could be found mostly around the Klang Valley or the West Coast only! Every state, town and village should to be equally developed with infrastructures such as water, electricity, housing, Internet, school, hospitals, roads and better employment prospects.
Basic issues such as law, unemployment, human right, freedom of speech, health care, housing, environment, civic consciousness and public transportation need a quick implementation! In Malaysia, majority still depend on a monthy salary/wage. No rules for a minimum wage. Plus, a mortagage is the best way to 'own' a house or a car. While the average salary/ rate for populations is rather low, many people are dragged into a working class group and struggling! Also, the cost of goods and sevices- house, car, petrol, groceries, tax and even crime are getting higher.
We do not want to be like India or China, where these countries are said to become a Superpower soon. Even, they are more capable in terms of resources, manpower, goods, services or industries. In the province and rural areas however, many people sleft without basic infrastructures like water, electricity, job, medicine, education and proper shelter?
No doubt that Malaysia is developing well but rather stagnant! Malaysia must find effective solutions to change and improve. It is not only in terms of economic achievement but social development needs to balance too!

No way...its just talk but no action....maybe if Tun Dr.Mahatir was the PM, then we will still have a change...he made a lot of changes in the county....the present PM sorry to say is more to the religious side rather than the economic side..

It's a good question-I'd day 2020 is too soon, 2040 would be more realistic. KL and the the other large cities will be likely have "first world" type standards of living by 2020, but rural poverty will likely persist until such time that the government can "throw money" at the problem.

Yes... why? Continuous change of attitude in management of resources, policies, etc. Is happening drastically these days. Keep it up.

No.... why? If continue to talk rather than taking action IMMEDIATELY.

Malaysia has "almost" got 1st world facilities, but sad to say, 99% of the population still has 3rd world mentality. So sad.

Its gonna take a while to change the mentality. Right now, the biggest problem seems to be security. Rising crime and violence. Police can't seem to do much. They are paid way too little.

Sometimes life is upside down
Malaysia isn't doing so badly these days. I've visited several times since I was a child, and the progress it's made is quite astonishing. A lot of Malaysians still live in poverty, I believe, but there are definitely other countries worse off. The blatant racism there is a bit frightening; I would hope that's gone by 2020. I would say Malaysia pretty much IS a developed nation; KL amazed me when I was there a few years ago. I don't think Malaysia will be a superpower by 2020 or even a global power the way China is and the way India is becoming, nor do I think it will be an important Asian player in a decade's time; but I don't think that's a bad thing. When you're powerful, you attract negative attention.

Malaysia with its reasonable size population is much easier to manage than Indonesia. I really think the key to Malaysia success will be the real integration of the Chinese,Indians or other races into the nation. Forget all that rubbish about race and religion, just focus on unity and progress. You guys can see a good example of how a nation should not be and that is Indonesia.

As long as extremism does not set in and hopefully nothing like the Bali bombing sets is (which I read was master minded by a lunatic M'sian professor), then it could happen. And also stop the rubbish rethoric against the West, nobody listens and for a small nation, its better to have friends than pissed off enemies.
