Good God, most of you are ill informed, some of you are racists, some of you have no idea what you are talking about, some of you have brought up things that are no longer accurate --------- and I'd think that some of you are still living in the 60's when China was truly screwed up.

I live here now and here it is in a nutshell.

After living here for almost a year, I have a pretty good grasp of what China is really like. I still have a lot to learn and I am sure my opinions will change with time, but the bottom line is this.

This is certainly no utopia and obviously China has a way to go before they will be on parity with the western style of living and freedom. However, in the last 20 years China has advanced so much, given their people more freedom, more say in their government then anytime in their 5,000 year history. That for the USA and other western powers to demand instant change for China is not looking at their past and measuring against their present, or their culture, their system or people and is selfish as hell.

Instant change will result in instability as there are huge political pressures and powerful people who want to live in the past that will throw all of China’s efforts in the trash and probably result in a system that’s as broken as Iraq. Obviously, the reality of instant change, as we’ve seen in the wake of Iraq and Afghanistan and their flimsy governments, the resulting China system could prove to be as counterproductive to the West’s interests, as well as the people interests in China as what is happening in the Middle East now.

Let China move at its own pace, it’s clear as day they are going in the right direction. We need to give China credit where credit is due and stop the China bashing. Look at the China reporting. There is always something negative to be said and rarely do we see stories of the positive directions that they are heading. We are bombarded with stories of human rights abuses in China, while not looking at our own such as Gitmo and all the secret prisons scattered around the world, to our overflowing penal system where that’s turned into big business and the criminal justice and political system that is feeding that.

As one political leader here in China put it when a USA politician demanded that Beijing clean up its human rights abuses, ‘we’ll talk about that after you clean up your own house.’

Most importantly is the personal lessons China has taught me. In the USA we have a habit of dwelling on the negative whereas China dwells on the positive. Every black cloud has a silver lining and no matter how bleak things may seem, there is almost always something good that comes from it. But to dwell on the negative, from personal in the individual sense to international as this country does is as counter productive as running away and not facing the issues and reasons that such destructive behavior exist.

Individually we should be better then that, as a country we must, but sadly, in both cases, the habits are part of our culture, ingrained in our psyche and hard to break.

There is enough ugliness in the world, why add to it.

Finally, the Chinese government doesn’t have me on a short leash. I’ve never been approached by any government official for any reason other then welcoming me to China and helping me with any problems I may have. I can say and do whatever I please, as long as I don’t break the laws or my work contract. I am free to travel anywhere I want in China at any time whatsoever. There are no travel permits required, no offices to visit, no officials to contact.

What you will hear often in the press are things that are no longer true about China. For instance, in 2003 I was not allowed to drive a car outside of any large city. The law was removed by the time I returned in 2004. Yet in 2006 I’ve seen current references to travel restrictions in China from western news. China is a country in transition and most of what you hear in the press and from our government is no longer applicable.

China’s changes are so rapid that to make declarative statements without doing the research often ends up with a lot of egg on the reporters face. The reporters saving grace is the protection of common held beliefs. Their disservice is to both China and humanity.

I don't think you should go there if you can't even speak and spell English yet.

Sorry dude. It does NOT suck.

I have worked and lived there for more than 3 years and I absolutely love it. I would stay if my company did not send me back to the USA.

Life is so great there. Here are some examples:
1) Food is different in every state. The taste is so so different.
2) Meeting people is such an ease. I have met so many beautiful people (W), I lost count.
3) The beautiful landscape.
4) the entertainment: KTV, saunsa, massages, clubs, bars...etc.

If you have experience 1/10th of what I did, you would not have ask this Q. I miss it every moment of my life.

GL.

I've just come back from Beijing and I'm a Chinese from Hong Kong, I do not think China sucks! It is moving forward with a bright future!

If you are an American, I think you better mind your own business more!

Below are some data from "The Economist" - Pocket World in Figures - 2007 Edition.

The Economic Freedom Index of China is 3.34 while USA is just 1.84

China was the # 3 country which has largest surpluses (balance of payments / current account) 68,659 US$m, # 1 was Japan 172,060 US$m, # 2 was Germany 103,770 US$m in 2005.

While USA was the #1 country which has largest deficits (balance of payments / current account) -668,070 US$m which is a lot more than the surpluses of Japan, Germany and China added up!

China is preparing 2008 Olymplics, some world class (designed by renowned Architects) Architectual structures are now in construction progress and all scheduled to be completed in 2008.

USA is still sending soldiers to Iraq and having election in 2008, it seems USA needs to spend more money on war or may be ruining her economy while China is spending money on improving her economy!

As a frequent traveler, I have been to many places in the world, I like Europe, Japan and certainly my hometown Hong Kong most!

I honestly do not like to spend time in USA, the reason is very simple, I do not like my brief case to be searched from top to bottom (kinda like Chinese quick stir frying) for at least 5 minutes, then took me around 20 minutes to pack my stuff back into order + they didn't let me lock my brief case!!!!!

There is nowhere as difficult as the US custom, even I took the domestic flights last time from Kauai to Honululu just (35 minutes flight time), 2 officers pulled all my stuff out (including my underwear, slippers, socks!!!!), again in Honululu, they once did the same thing! When I reached Tokyo and changed flight to fly back Hong Kong, I finally felt I was safe! It took me only a few minutes to pass the Hong Kong custom!

USA gives me an impression that it is unsafe to stay in any one of their airports because of the way they check my brief case + all the others' luggages, it makes me feel like there are terrorists going to blow up the planes or the airports at anytime and that's why they have to check seriously! Why should I want to go to places like USA that makes me nervous for holidays?

I bet you have never been to China, if you believed what other negative answers here about China, it is up to you. You wouldn't know what you loose until you once visited China and view the truth with your own eyes!

plenty of people are moving to China, at least in the short term to take advantage of the economic boom. just because you don't hear about it doesn't mean it's not happening.

as for China "sucking", well it is going through massive industrialisation which most of the developed world passed through many decades ago now, so it is rather polluted and using up its resources at an alarming rate. it has a mighty economy, and if it keeps going on like this then it'll be one huge player in the global economy, much more than it is now, much bigger than the USA too for that matter.

so, does it "suck", that's subjective, coz the food is ok (i prefer Thai, Indian and Vietnamese food thanks), the people are friendly, the history is amazing, the land bloody huge (3rd largest country), the scenery is breathtaking, and etc etc etc

hmm, to me the only thing that "sucked" was my gf, but that was in a good way.

so, nope, China doesn't "suck", but why don't you go there and find out for yourself, no better way to learn.

Sanmigsean
No, it doesn't suck. I know a lot of people who moved there recently. There are more opportunities in business than in the USA (not for simple workers, but for business people).

You need to read more.

China IS the "land of opportunity" these days. Practically every US and western corporation is looking to invest or open facilities in China. I'm sure YOU don't hear of anybody moving to China, because it's obvious from your question, your spelling and your tone that the people you surround yourself with don't get too far from the trailer park. Sure, life is different in China, but China has the most dynamic and the fastest growing economy in the world, and yes, thousands and thousands of people and corporations are moving into China to try and do business there and take advantage of the huge market China represents, as well as the rapidly growing standard of living and disposable income there. Please, before you make statements and ask questions like the ones you have posted, try doing a little research, or better yet, visit China and you might be able to ask more intelligent questions.

It sucks, but it has potential. There are good, sensible people in China, but they are not currently in control of the country.

So i guess this would mean that every other country in world except america sucks just because it hasn't been called a land of oppertunity? Anyways, China isn;t too bad, for a communist state it runs quite smoothly. They've even introduced some capitalist concepts. Some of the brightest minds today come from China as their communist education program is praised as the best in the world.Even though china is considered a third world country and immensely overpopulated, their economy grows larger every year. It is estimated that China will soon take over as the world's economic and military superpower!

Edit
The misconception of Chinese citizens unweary about their own hygiene is a load of ****, people in china are just like you and me. You gotta be kidding me? Do you really believe that China's police force commits suicide? And no, not all people defecate in holes in the ground, China has what we call oh I don't know...Plumbing? You should lay off FOX news bud.

Charles Lu
It's not too bad in the country side. The cities are ridiculous though.

I'm a non-chinese local Hong Konger working in Shanghai. Yes their are things that are not good about China. But I'd rather work here than in America.

Yes! It sucks big times. All Americans that live in China are traitors and turncoats. They should never be aloud to reture. If they like China so much they can stay there........FOREVER!

The vast majority of the people in China are completely filthy with no concept of hygiene, and most arguments end up into fist fights. If you go there, stick to the popular tourist areas.

Sarah.
Well..even though I'm chinese...I kinda have to say yes.
I mean, it's filthy D: And the bathrooms are holes in the ground. And the people there smoke together (so, I'm constantly walking in a giant ball of smoke.)
then again, business wise, I'd have to say no way!
Plus, fake items..(Gucci, Nintendo, Prada, Adidas) Hahaha xD

Brian W
I would probably only move there for the food. Other than that, im sticking to America.

mrtnlu
People don't move there because they are communists. It has nothing to do with whether the place sucks.
And to the answer regarding the food...real Chinese food is nothing like American Chinese food. It's edible here. Over there, it is all cooked in some nasty smelling grease, and you find webbed feet, eels, intestines, and whatever else they can pull from a dead animal in your rice.
It's only the land of opportunity because the president has forced American businesses to move their labor forces there. Eventually, we'll have a President who cares more about America than about installing Democracy in the middle-east.
In summary, I guess I'd have to say that yes, China sucks. But so does the US right now, so choose your poison.

are they still commies? Then, yes, China sux!

dreamweaver
I wouldn't want to migrate to China even if the Government were to give lots of perks for foreigners to do so!! The country is overcrowded and the locals sucks!!! I wouldn't want my children growing up in that kind of environment where practically everybody swears, smoke in non-smoking areas, are rude, spits everywhere and talk loudly.

NO WAY!!!!

europhile
I think China DOES NOT suck except for their government... I hate Communists... and sometimes their people. They're very dirty...

musical_tide
Well The food is okay but there houses are only as big as your room, Don't have bathrooms but if they do its just a hole in the floor, no stores you have to run around the streets buying rotten foods, and the worse the chinese police whatever u want to call them commit sucide whenever they want and just for the fun of it.....
