Does the world really needs religion or just plain faith will do? |
I have a history of a broken family. My family broke up when some of my relatives started to join fellowships and being baptized to another religion. Day after day, it seemed like endless arguments like which is the true religion, what religion would save us and so on. I completely lost this belief that religion could make me a better person. Now, I just simply rely on my basic instincts like what is good and what is bad and that keeps me away from harm. And I have this theory that wars before were created by religion. What about the wars of today? Thanks. Additional Details Oops! This kind of question has never been answered before? Okay enough about the wars. Just let me know what
is your personal thought regarding on the matter. By the way...this question...is it bannable. Oh dear! I hope not! |

Religion is a way for some people to hold on to the fact that there is a god, that they have something to believe in. Some believe that religion is a way to solidify a person's belief. It could also be viewed as a way for people to identify themselves as being part of a group, as in their particularly religious groups.
But I sometimes think that religion is one of the main causes of conflict. A lot of wars have started on behalf of a group believing their religion to be the ultimate one.
So I believe that plain faith will do. If a person really believes in the existence or non-existence thereof, of a god, the absence of a religious group should not hinder one from keeping his belief alive. |

Yes, you are correct, because religion is define as a set of beliefs and practices generally held by a community, involving adherence to codified beliefs and rituals and study of ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and mystic experience. The term "religion" refers to both the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction.
Its a long discussion and your question is too broad to discuss with.
That statement about "wars" give your question even worse and takes a lot of time to discuss.
LOL.
As you can see, we already had different answers to your question.

Religare - to bind (ligare) again (re) with God
Relego - to read (lego) again (re) the scriptures
Plain faith will not work that eezy, one must also work his faith. For example, the true apostles work hard eventhough their faith was great... Truly there were endless arguments about religion talk. Because those religion were not the true religion made by God thru Jesus. What they see was the wrong doings of each other. As of now, as I see (this is my own opinion) there is still no perfect religion. But, if I see one I will surely join in.
Why should I join a good religion? Religion teaches how to serve God. And I want to serve him.
And I'll be searching, and keep on searching until I find it. I'll never loose hope.
By the way, your relatives? They never join a religion. They just join a CHURCH or sect. They just call it religion, but never know what means. |

wow, this is a really deep question and each person will have a different answer.
first of all, it is healthy to belong to a religion. you just have to listen to a good homily to realize that the scriptures have so much relevance to our lives. it just makes you think, you know? it gives you a sort of "guide" on how to live your life because that's what church leaders are there for, to "enlighten" and to "guide". faith on the other hand, is a personal thing, it's a continuous choice and searching. you cant be part of a religion and not have faith.
but i think everyone has to remember that religion is man-made. it is interpreted by man. and man can make mistakes. men think in different ways. that is why it is not wise to follow everything your religion says. you also have to rely on your moral compass, your reason and your faith.
for example: each religion teaches love. (right?) in one form or another. somewhere along the centuries it was passed down, men translated things differently and sects began sprouting everywhere. but if you look closely, the basic teaching is there. love. kindness. belief in a higher being or an idea. striving to better one's self through goodness.
sometimes i think that if everyone sat and discussed the root of all these teachings, we'll probably find ourselves agreeing more than not.
all the curses, the damnation, the "chosen people" stuff, i believe people just made up for power. so that more people will follow them. in turn, the real teachings are lost. this causes wars, ancient and modern wars. it's sad really, especially if religion is used as the reason for war or killings, when we all know that no religion really teaches evil.
i still believe we need religions, just like countries need governments. guidance, governance and unity. but just like countries, each person has to work, to think and to continuously strive and not just blindly follow everything that is passed on to him. each person must know what he is putting his faith in and why. because just like governments, religions can also be twisted by misunderstanding, greed, or even plain ignorance.
as an individual, faith alone can sustain you.
as a community, religion is essential
that's what i think, anyway :) |

What do you think? Religion is a very important aspect in our lives. It teaches us to be humble, to be grateful for what we have, to be honest, to be sincere and most of all, to be humans. It is easy to do away with religion and live our lives according to our conscience but, without religion in the first place, would we know that we have a conscience? That we would know what is right and what is not? No, we won't know unless we had religion to teach us, to guide us. Well, you are an adult capable of reasoning, you found out you could do away without it in your life. The question is, is relying on your faith, or, on your instincts have done you more good than when you were fully attuned to the presence of God in your life? Has it been more fruitful and more fulfilling than when you have brothers or sisters in faith to share your joys and condole with you in times of sorrow? |

The world needs something to believe in. We as humans need that. But faith is what's most impt no matter what your religion is. It's faith that will save you and not religion. |

All wars are simply a struggle over the control of resources; religion is often an excuse or a banner people wave to justify their actions.
But seriously, volumes of books have been written on this subject trying to answer it and cannot; yet you ask it on Yahoo! Answers? Let the flamewar begin... |

Wars of today are created by people, not religion. Faith is what matters... faith in God. We are not supposed to be religious people; but righteous. We shouldn't preach religion; we should preach Jesus Christ! You should find a congregation that will assist you in growing as a Christian.

They use religion to control other people and if the people rebel against it, then that triggers a war. This was done in the mid centuries and I think it is still happening today. However, there is a shift now towards economic expansion rather through religion in controlling others.
Going back to your question, I think the bottomline is your personal relationship with the Lord. The new generation tends to be more open-minded because of vast information available to us now, unlike in the generation of our parents where... |

try islam, you don't have to argue with other religion cos it is tantamount to committing sin, God said to the believers "and your duty is but to deliver the clear message", to argue, to convert, to ridicule or to make others lose face coz of "defeat" in a debate is a sin."there is no compulsion in religion"
being a muslim, you'll be curse if you neglect your aging parents. |

This is a KEY question, although the wars side-note is slightly tangential. I asked both myself. In summary:
1) there are plenty of good people (better than myself) who are not religious ostensibly (outwardly seeming),
2) And yes, many have perpetrated wars and other (evil) acts in the NAME of religion.
But, I do believe that religion can be a great tool for the betterment of mankind as well. Technology is a tool for good or evil, as are the writings of the Word of God (from many religions)...interpreted and used with a loving heart, they do great good. Interpreted with selfishness and hatred, they do great harm. The prophet's of the Bahai Faith explain that religious leaders who inflict interpretations upon their followers that sponsor hate lead many astray and truly are not of God. More to your specific family problem, the Bahai faith would say having different beliefs is fine as long as their is respect and lack of judgment. The very problem that is keeping mankind divided is putting MY prophet above YOURS, instead of seeing (as the Bahai faith says) that they are different voices singing the same song. We are ONE. |

for me, there is no problem practicing our religion whether by birth right (parents religion and baptized during baby) or choice (those who change religion)
whether Buddhist, Jew, Muslim, christian, Hindu etc....
what is important is that we respect each other. and another aspect is that if we do good to fellow men, God or Allah or Buddha will not mind.
and besides whatever his name is, there is still a common denominator, THERE IS A SUPREME BEING ABOVE US |

I think plain faith will do because no matter what religion you belong if you are still doing bad things so it is useless. For example I heard of a priest that has been accused of rape, that does not make sense because people are looking after him as their role model. |

there are two things i hate the most... politics & religion. i leave them to the wisest of all the wisest... you're right, the argument is endless... and the worst of it is that, it tends not to solve the problem, but to complicate it more... i mean, for both subjects (politics & religion). your faith will be reflected from your actions.. do a little good deed everyday, instead of just praying so loud. what you do to others, will be done unto you.. |

As a noble man I own and rule my own religion.
I work for an organization that spent about $2.8M into the Philippines in 2006 and a little bit more by the end of this year, by way of programs and projects in education and health care. I'm earning 6 figures, eating out, being cool, driving a luxury sports car, watching sports on your 42" TV and vacationing in Europe. |
