one's piety has nothing to do with one's aberration for the life of crime. may i point out how deeply religious the corleone family was? oops, i digress...sorry
seriously, being religious (going to church) is not the same as being morally upright...therefore, corruption - notably among our politicians - continues to exist altho these are the very same people we see every sunday kneeling in silent prayer (maybe?). |

Religious does not literally mean you are a good-doer..
As for Filipinos, our country is poor, the government is corrupt, the rich gets richer and the poor keeps in getting poorer, how would they survive do you think?
Please, you might as well include dirty politics... |

America is the most "religious" country on the planet and look at our crime rate. Religion does nothing but divide people, promote discontent, and give false hopes that ultimately crush initiative and the ability of people to stand on their own two feet. Far from being surprising that a "religious" country has crime, poverty, and sickness I would be surprised to find a "religious" country with even a moderate level of social ills. |

Many Filipinos are religious but there are as many who are less or not religious at all. People committ crimes for many reasons, some do it because they were just "bad" people, some people ( even religious ones ) committ crime out of desperation especially when they are not only poor but lack of many other things but receive very little help from others. All religion teach us not be do bad things but how many of the followers really adhere to all the teachings. I hate to say this but corruption is very prevalent in poor and developing countries, i know it is wrong but sometimes if we think further, the government servants just have to do that because they receive peanut pay from the government.
Some Muslim countries have very strict law for crimes. Stealing a cheap item can led to amputation of arms and even with such harsh punishment, people still steal and bear in mind these people are living in a very religious / extremist environment. |

One should make a distinction between religiosity and spirituality. One could be religious--i.e. go to Mass regularly, participate in other sacraments like communion and confession, attend religious festivals like the Penafrancia or Black Nazarene, even pray--and still be distant from God by having a basically materialistic and uncharitable mindset. Religion is just outward manifestation; spirituality is what goes on inside. Religiosity is what most foreigners remark about Filipinos as having; but the lack of spirituality could also be clearly seen in the rampant crime, corruption as well as poverty that characterize our society.
The term "split-level Christianity" has been used to describe this situation (see, for example, http://www.cadi.ph/Editorials/Editorial_Engaged_Christianity.htm). Filipinos are split into having almost fanatical observance of religious rites, but are almost pagan at a deeper, more essential level. |

crime and corruption are rampant not just in the Philippines. it is a bit absurd and simple minded of anyone to think that just because Filipinos are religious, crime rate and corruption should be at minimum. considering the recent events of this century, more and more people are actually committing crime for religious purposes. |

Filipinos are not the only ones religious and crime and corruption is not limited to the Philippines. Even Islamic extremists and terrorists claim to be religious too. Isn't Malaysia one of the training grounds of such barbarities? |

It is the essence of most faiths that there shall be a Day of Judgment, and those who shall be annihilated / punished for all eternity - shall be as numerous as the grains of sand.
Those people who turn to crime and corruption should be the fulfillment of these prophecies. In all probability, you too must have read these prophecies, being a Christian as you claim, and you wanted to join the bandwagon, since it is apparent that by your question, that you are being self-righteous and judgmental against your brothers. Don't you know that he who says he believes in God whom he cannot see, but hates his brother whom he does see, is a liar? Do you know what happens to liars on Judgment Day?
I tell you, verily, verily - we shall see each other there, and we shall roast in the lake of fire, forever and ever! So, Cheers!! |

Philippines is a Christian Catholic country. Religion holds a central place in the life of most Filipinos. The strong personal faith of the Filipinos is unique.
Don't associate religion with the act of committing crimes and corruptions. Religion is not a basis of such evil acts.
Don't post your questions here, as if you are a Catholic. Where are you from? Are there any crimes and corruptions in your country? I bet your country is worse than Philippines than you can imagined.
Have you been the Philippines? Filipinos are known for hospitality and kind hearted people.
Do you think, you and your people are better than Filipinos?
Think again.
Come and visit Philippines, and see for yourself. |

religious and faithful are different. 'religious' means participating many processions, going to mass, doing the rosary, etc. 'Faithful' means having that strong obedience and trust in God's words.
it is when people are faithful that makes a country clean because it is with faith that enables God's light to illuminate through. |

Practicing religious rituals, regardless of your motivation for doing so, does not make you a "good" or "honest" or even a "respectful" citizen. It only gives the appearance of being one. Crime and corruption are facts of life in EVERY civilized society, but only more publicized in those where freedom of the press is at least to some degree allowed. Where there is poverty, there is frustration, hopelessness and crime. Where there is power to be had, there is corruption. No civilization, regardless of religious leanings, is free of it. |

Very true. Filipinos are deeply religious but not spiritual. Big difference. Our being religious in the Philippines is mostly based on how devout we are to the Catholic Church and not on the word of the Lord--the Bible. If we can can translate our being religious into being more spiritual, then perhaps the Philippines will be a better country. I too am Catholic btw. |

Although philippines is a very catholic country, it is also a third world country, where people are always lacking in money. Many people just don't have enough money for necessities. And even if they have jobs, those jobs are not nearly enough to pay for rent, bills or food. And so they probably have to turn to other ways, easier ways to get the money. It is not to say that filipinos have no morals but perhaps people taking bribes etc for certain things is for them, a way of life where they can get the extra money they need. Sometimes they just don't want to have to look for more jobs where they would eventually be getting such little income. Find easier ways is probably the motto for many of them. It actually is pretty sad that this is the case.
And of course just as in other places in the world, there are people who are just bad and have no regrets in doing bad things. Criminals are found everywhere and not just in the philippines. |
