No one would believe I'm a Filipino, even if I speak tagalog.
They said i looked like a "Bumbay".

People think I'm Mexican, or just "mixed," but that's what Filipinos are, aren't we? A race with Malay, Indonesian, Spanish, Chinese, Indian blood right? |

...yes, much too often here in the states and even in my travels to europe...i have a hispanic-sounding last name and i do speak spanish; ergo, i'm latina! i used to be disgusted (altho i tried not showing it) but now i just smile and say - as nicely and as emphatically as i could - "i'm sorry but i'm not hispanic...i'm a filipina from the philippines!" - and under my breath, i'd mutter - if you ask me again, i'll tell you the same!!! LOL |

Often mistaken as Malaysian or Indonesian. No, I don't feel offended in anyway and do not want to look any different also. |

Haha! Lots of times! Probably because I'm not all Filipino, I'm part Japanese and Chinese. So, a lot of people mistake me for being Jap or Chinese. I don't get offended, coz it's partly true anyway. :D |

Yeah but I was never offended since every race has its own qualities to be proud of. |

With a name like mine, it would greatly depend on where I am.
In California, I'm Mexican.
In Florida, I'm Cuban.
In New York, I'm Puerto Rican.
Here in London, I'm either Brazillian or any other latin American country.
In Norway I was once approached by a group of Vietnamese women speakiing their native tongue.
The wierd thing is that even with my Filipino sounding name and Filipino like appearance and skin color, when Filipinos in the Philippines find out I have a foreign Citizenship, they often ask me "So, your parents are both Filipino or what?" |

i can relate with what confused, way up there, said.
for having spent a considerable time in california I've have also been mistaken of having a different ethnicity many times.
such as for a hispanic, cambodian, vietnamese, japanese, chinese & many others by both foreigners & filipinos alike.
& i have learned not to get offended. & i have also learned not to assume that on others.
have i wished i looked different? while growing up, but that was years ago, during the teen years. |

Yeah, most of the people here in UAE even Filipinos mistakenly thought I am Japanese, Korean, or Singaporean national... |

Yup. I worked for a university in the Philippines where there are other Asian students, I was thought to be KOREAN. No offense taken, not a problem really.
Do I wish to be different? No. Maybe different leaders but the color of my skin, I'm good as it is. |

like it or not, i know lots of filipinos outside the philippines would prefer to be mistakenly identified with other nationality, for their locals mostly look down upon us.I won't mention what they thought of us, very insulting. |

in Baclaran, was mistaken that I am a Korean...when I was at Korea was mistaken to be a Korean too!!!
I don't look like a Korean really.....I'm slim but not slim as them, I have fair skin but not like them but maybe it's my aura whatever...offended? No, not really.....it's okay... but I'm still proud to be a Filipina and would like to be known as a Filipina in any other county.
I don't wish to look different. I like the way I am. |

they were intrigued because of my surname, they thought I'm part Italian...
when I was in a restaurant, then a Mexican waiter asked me what would I like to order, he spoke to me in Spanish... then I told him "No Hablo EspaƱol"... he thought i was a Mexican, too like him...
When I was new in school, my classmates thought that I was a Latino or Hispanic... |

In Singapore shops they talk to me in Chinese, even if I have big eyes. Must be my yellow complexion. But I am not offended, I know there is not harm intended. Plus, Chinese is not any inferior race. |

Oten, I am told I look Chinese but it doesn't offend me at all. Because it's true. I have more Chinese blood in me than I have Filipino and Spanish (on my mother side who have both Spanish and Chinese blood). I wish I looked more like my cousins on my mother's side. The Spanish blood is very prominent in their features and no one can ever mistake them for any other race. |
