Fact or fiction: five second rule?

Is it the one when a food dropped on the floor and you pick it up again to eat and reasoned: it's less than 5 seconds that's why it's safe?

Hmm, my friend (not me) says it is true. Because when a microbe or bacteria see a falling big chunk of solid thing that will hit their head of course first instict will tell them to ran away from that thing. So, they will just return to it when they are already safe to eat it.

You could also conduct a experiment to yourself. Let someone climb the third floor. Inside a bag of candies put a fist-sized stone. You stay at the groundfloor, tell your friend to drop the bag of candy (w/ the stone) in your head. What will you do?............... Of course, run away from it. Then come back to get some candies.

hehe, try it at home.

When we were kids the five-second rule applied most of the time (the food may be retrieved), but we had to check first if somebody else was looking.

Fiction. Bacteria and virus grab on by contact, and even brief encounters of the split-second variety can be more than enough for them to claim a new home address. They harbor no respect for a time barrier of a specific number of seconds.

But, to the hungry streetpeople, the rule extends up to several hours. Ever heard of "pagpag?"

Fiction. And even if it were a fact, it will be conveniently ignored by the poor who even scavenge for food in the dumps. What is this 5-second rule to them? Tell me.

that's a fiction..bacteria and germs are everywhere..

Wood77
I also saw this experiment done on myth busters, ( great show ) but yes they proved it was fiction! bacteria was all over the things dropped.

battgirl
Fact. Didn't you know that the germs get stunned when your food fall hence they need five seconds to regroup???? LOL

Seriously, if food is something sticky and wet, if it falls, forget it. I am not picking it up

Chips and dry food, it can range from 1 nanosecond to a minute and maybe i will pick it up

=)

Got to be fiction. It's just something our elders taught us so we don't waste food.

Confused?
If you were to follow this In the Philippines it would be a death sentence.

daluyong00
fiction... i saw this episode on mythbusters... they shattered that "five second rule"

fact to me. it's always my alibi.

Fiction. Bacteria can actually attach itself to food in about two seconds, so five seconds is long enough for bacteria to get on and party.

The five-second rule was featured in an episode of the Discovery Channel series MythBusters. The results they got showed time was not a factor when food is exposed to bacteria; even two seconds' exposure is more than enough time to contaminate it.

I usually don't pick up the food anymore once it falls on the floor. Better safe than sorry. ;)

Here's some more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_second_rule

firstkiss
fiction, but i follow the 10 second rule:)

rogue_9506
Fiction. Yet... we need germs sometimes. Haha!

tranquil
Fiction, I may eat food that has fallen off the plate longer than five seconds. That is why my immune system is strong. Hahaha!

doktorangbaliw
fiction. it takes less than 5 seconds for bacteria to stick to something and multiply.

...then again, there's always the hydrochloric acid in the stomach. part of it's function is to clean or "sterilize" the food we eat.

magashioda
Fiction, but followed by most people

Juan C
fiction for me...

Dennis
hwag lng sa putik (as long as it's not in the grimy dirt), i'd pick it up in matter of seconds so i guess it's fact to me.

maybe fiction because when a material falls on the floor surface , the material will capture solid particles that contains bacterias and any microbes that will invade the materials cleanliness hahahah. there is no way that you can escape bacterias

RandomStranger

Fiction: a recent report stated that you have between 30 seconds and 1 minute before germs and bacteria attach themselves to the food item in a way that might cause sickness if ingested. However, it's probably saver to obey the 5 second rule if at all possible.
