Filipinos: Do you hate it when someone says?

Xmas instead of CHRISTMAS?
X usually means 0 or nil
Does that mean that Christ is not a factor of Christmas?
Additional Details
I say Christmas and never Xmas...

Yes it bothers me very much.

It seems the dreaded “they” hate seeing anything that might reference Our Creator and keep shorting the word.

When I was young I remember many people spelled it Christsmass
later it became Christmass
Then later it was Christmas
Now it’s x-mas
I figure in the future it will just be X
Or maybe they will change it all together to $

It is so sad that the world seems to be trying to hide the true meaning of a very special day everyway they can.

Just something to think about doesn’t the Bible talk about, as we get nearer to the last days, a world that would try to destroy all reference to Christ and Our Creator?

May Our Creator Bless and watch over you and your family.

And may you have a very happy and peaceful ChristsMass.

Luis Besa
No. this is just my opinion. X reminds me of a cross, that Christ suffered just to redeem our sins. I hope that Christians should not think negatively about substituting Christ from X. It's in the true faith!

You have a point there, Battgirl.

"X" is a mathematical sign for the unknown. If we spell Christmas with this symbol, it's as if this occasion, "Xmas" is largely a question mark. But this is the trend. We have to accept it and not be annoyed. Acceptance is the secret for survival. You should know that, having gone through our training in the Mission Impossible Team. Besides, they have not yet issued the order to force everyone to say "Christmas" instead of "Xmas". Therefore, we should not yet embark on this mission.

Our mission, Flash, should you decide to accept it - is to locate the whereabouts of the First Answerer, who is guilty of littering YAP with advertisements about "Cheap Flight somethin". Once we do this, our mission is to force him to provide free tickets for OFWs from the Middle East.

EDIT: He is gone!! You did it, Flash. Gone in the blink of an eye! You really work fast, I'd say!!

No. It's just a shortcut and widely accepted.

Just like XING (crossing) for some street signs. Just a shortcut for the long word but does not mean you cannot cross the street if there is a XING sign.

The word "Christmas" is a contraction of two words "Christ's mass" and is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038. In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ (Χριστός). Since the mid-16th century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, was used as an abbreviation for Christ. Thus, Xmas is an abbreviation for Christmas.

I, too, always use Christmas and never like the the use of X.

X in english may mean nothing but not for Greeks

i used to hate the word Xmas before, so i pried instead. i had to i'd go crazy if i won't and then someone told me it stands for "Christ" (exactly as what the other answerers said). so i came to appreciate it.

today i use Xmas in text, when read it should be in english "Christmas". i will dare debate those people i hear to pronounce it eXmas, as you have said it does not mean anything. of course we can't read it as CHImas because Greeks don't speak in Greeklish.

no problem for me..

I always capitalize the word 'CHRIST' in Christmas whenever I text someone in my phone...

"please... don't take Christ out of Christmas..."

I think that 'x' is just used to shortcut the word. It's just how people interpret things you know. Just because I texted someone Merry X'mas, it doesn't mean that I already disregard Christ or something that you would like to interpret. The fact that I am greeting someone means that I would like to remind them about Christmas... definitely it includes the spirit of Christmas.

Edith
not really

Judezen
hello.. when you r texting u say xmas to save more space for your messages..but the thought of Christmas as Christ is present is still there.. reading the word Xmas is different on how u interpret the true meaning of Christmas..

im a filipina :)

Bato
I second the motion with Luis.

It doesn't matter how you call Him, what matters is your faith in Him.

I prefer to use Christmas over Xmas...

As per my Church teaching, it is affirmed that the X is the symbol of Christ and the X is also the symbol of the cross...

However, I am a man of little faith or almost no faith... Hence, I simply cannot comrehend Christ in symbols... I need something concrete just like the word "Christ" itself rather than the symbol...

Possibly, those who are much mature in their faith have no problem in comprehending the symbols at all...

like to hear Christmas ,

Jerry
Hate is such a strong word :) I prefer hearing and using Christmas

the practice of using X actually predates to early 1020AD. It comes from the greek alphabet X (chi) P (rho) which is the first letters in the greek spelling of Christ.

Notice a that lot of the old christian denominations (Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic) still use the intersecting P and X as symbolical of Christ.

I always say Christmas, coz 'X' for means nothing, or as what you've said '0'. But sometimes, i write christmas as xmas as well, especially when text messaging

sheer♥black
It just feels awkward for me. It's actually kind of disrespectful to God, but I'm trying to get used to it every year.

Is xmas for malcome x day?

pristine
in some alphabet (i can not recall if its roman or something) the letter "C" is written the same way sa "X" therefore the famous "x-mas" is not really a depiction of erasing Christ in the picture... He's the very heart of christmas isn't He?...

the "x" in x-mas is just a "C" written in a different alphabet, not "0"

hope you find this one helpful :)

merry christmas :)

annabelle p
Not really but it somehow is disrespectful of the word since Christmas came from the root word CHRIST.

~Amor~
i don't hate it. it's just annoying

juan dela cruz
If it's written down, it's like a shortcut only so I guess it's okay. The message is still understood.

I did to since I thought that you should never replace the name of our Lord in term for his birthday but when I went to wikipedia it turned out that "Christ" in ancient greek was XP (abbreviated from the greek term, you would see XP in the labarum) and it was always abbreviated like that in ancient art...I still prefer the long term though...

Marcial M
i'm a filipino, if you say Xmas it means that you are neglecting the presence of jesus christ in christmas so you are substituting satan as "X" instead of "christ" if you really wanna learn how this word change, just aproach pastors or any persons who concerns bible.i'm a christian, i have learn about this word. If people saying that Xmas is the same with christmas, i'm just keeping quite because if i correct them they will say some things that will lead us to conflict. read bible, you have a good question, for more information, ask your pastors or keep on going to church every sunday and prayer meetings.
